This happened when I was a young kid and I thought it was so delightful. Now that I'm an adult, I'm just happy that I have a small boat in my yard. Although it's extremely unlikely that my yard could ever become flooded where I live now. Maybe I should give the boat to somebody on lower ground.

Being pedantic. That's a canoe. Kayaks are lower to the water, usually have a covered hull, and require a different style of paddle.
OP's mistake is what makes this mildly infuriating.
