Can we just not care? Commenting about cake day is the most annoying shit in the world. No one cares

lemmy.dbzer0.com

Finally, someone says it. Always hated those endless "happy cake day" replies. Sometimes it was 20 or 30 replies on a single comment of nothing but that cake day nonsense.

Back when I was a prolific Reddit karma whore (years ago) it was the best way to get free points for doing absolutely nothing. No purpose otherwise.

Hopefully with time we move away from the redditisms. A lot of overlap at the moment. Let's be a new community. Not a mirror of them.

Cultures adapt and shift slowly, but I would love for us to embrace becoming something new instead of trying to recapture what once was.

LEMMINGS MUST GO 3 DAYS WITHOUT POOPING STARTING EACH YEAR ON THEIR POOP DAY

lemmy.world

Um, I kind of liked it, though... Maybe an option to opt out? I'm fine with renaming it, too. I've always preferred key lime pie or tiramisu for my birthday.

3

Mmm.. Imma call mine "Croissant caramel pudding" just how Nigela likes it.

3

DAE narwhal bacons at midnight?

Edit: shit. Shoulda read ahead and noticed others had already made that joke.

OR... we could call it a cakeday too and rip this exclusive novelty from Reddit.

We're at war, gentlemen!

I am genuinely excited to see how many people stick around post June 30th. If this place stays as vibrant as it has then this is my new home for sure.

When all this API shit started kicking off I didn't really like the look of lemmy, but now it looks like the best. KBin was fun for a bit but felt kind of chaotic, plus not having posts vanish after upvoting/viewing the comments was a death sentene for me. The other alternatives are just shit IMO.

Plus looks like a lot of app devs are lemmyheads, Memmy has been great after installing it today. There's no way i'm using the reddit app post June so yea...Lemmy all the way, cause everything else blows for content consumption.

21

Same. I have Kbin, Tildes, Lemmy and a few others just to poke around, but I find I spend the most time here. I even went and found a script that makes Lemmy look a bit like Reddit and I am perfectly happy.

lemmy.world

Same on making posts hide after viewing. At first I didn't know how to make it happen, but I found it in settings.

You’re of course referring to the PC website and not the scroll marking on the mobile app right? 😁

2
lemmy.world

Yes. I use PC and I have tried Jerboa for mobile, but I'm liking Summit right now. Which app do you use and do you like it?

1

Memmy for iOS, the others feature text line breaks on my iPhone SE and/or don't vanish posts that I have upvoted upon refresh. Yuck :)

Kinda gutted to have lost my June 4th cakeday due to fleeing from Beehaw. Getting in before July 1st still makes me cool though, right? Right?! 😭

23

We will probably give ourselves some grandiose name like "Founders" All the original lemmy people pre-june2023 gonna get called "early Adopters" like lemmy didn't exist for like 3 or more years and they built it.

8

exactly

Someone used the term fledditors. That was me. I signed up on the Wednesday to beehaw after the boycott. I started lemmy.world the Sunday after. IDK. I like lemmy.world better, but beehaw is good too.

3

My Reddit Cakeday used to be nothing special. It's June 30th. There's a certain irony behind all this somewhere.

18

I know mine is somewhere in June or July, so it's really more of the same. You would think I'd learn in 13 years which day it is, but much like my actual birthday, it's just another day.

1
lemmy.world

It's gonna be a big ol' lemmy party around here next summer

16
lemmy.world

Hey does anybody know if this community is ran by the same people who ran the subreddit

I think that would be epic if so or is this just a clone

11
lemmy.world

It was the same with reddit after the mass Digg exodus

10

I actually might remember mine, because o joined here on the first day of the blackout. June 12th. Quit Reddit after 16 years on the 11th, so it's kinda memorable for me. And the 12th of a different month is my birthday, so that helps.

9
lemmy.world

Mine is June 1st, the first day we heard about the API bullshit. But then Beehaw defederated LW so I had to open an account on LW to follow a couple of communities

8

You could also open an account on a different instance altogether and subscribe to both lemmy.world and Beehaw communities from the same account

Lonely new years eve, probably found some porn you wanted to save...

6

Well 8 years ago I was browsing 9gag and I saw a meme about may the 4th and it had a r/ watermark (idk what r/) I didn't know what reddit was so I followed looked for it, found it and created an account.

Funny you say that. For some reason I had in my mind that 'winter' moves around the earth. But thinking about it, it doesn't work. It's just hemispherical.

2

Technically not quite hemispherical in that the tropics don't experience seasons either way.

Or how my uncle put it, they have "rainy season" and "not so rainy season", the difference being it rains every day at around 1pm in rainy season and "only" every second or third day in "not so rainy season", with neither being "summer". More like "summer & winter" vs "autumn & spring" or vice versa.

3

My reddit cake day is on April 10th, my birthday. The reason I made an account was because my favorite band was doing an AMA that day.

2

Imagine a lot of people have 12yo reddit accounts and migrated like I did when digg went to shit.

4
lemmy.world

I had the same thought this morning! I also wonder if there's a similar phenomenon with older redditors that came from digg. When was that?

4
Klearreply
lemmy.world

According to other comments 12 years ago and yes - it was exactly the same.

At least that's what they say. I missed the digg era, joined reddit 9 years ago.

2

Spooky! Mine too was 9 years! Feb 13, 2014. It was fun over there, but I like it here better.

1

Having cake days together is better than having a cake day alone I think

3

At least it isn't the 11th of September anymore, so I guess that's something. On the other hand I always remembered that it was my cake day.

I don't even remember how it became that in the first place; I usually try to stay away from social media that day and a few days around it.

3

My oldest r account's cake day was November, which is basically the worst month. I love summer, so bring it!

3

I mean, I just got here, so probably not. Talk to me in about a year and that might change.

2
lemmy.world

Wonder how big it'll get. Lemmy.world has felt a bit slow to load today -- maybe struggling with an influx of new users?

2
Klearreply
lemmy.world

I think it was because of a failed update to a new version.

4

I know mine will change when I end up building my own insurance. But I had a similar thought
