How are you going to avoid using reddit?
I just catched myself looking at reddit again.
To remind myself not to use reddit in the next few days (or never again if I succeed) I added it to my uBlock filter list. Additionally I deleted all reddit apps from my phone.
What's your strategy on how to avoid reddit?
I put the Jerboa app icon where Baconreader had been on my phone. I kept opening it by reflex. This seems to be working.
This is the way.
Pretty much! I still haven't even deleted Boost, but the icon has been replaced and I've already all but forgotten about it.
Me too. Sorry Boost, I will miss you.
A simple low impact one I came up with is moving the Jerboa app icon to where the reddit one used to be and moving the reddit one to the end of the list, so my muscle memory reddit log on takes me here instead.
Literally did the same.
This is the way.
Did the same thing earlier today.
I have an RSS feed reader that shows the first few posts on r/popular. As of now it's basically "x sub has gone dark" for every other post.
Keep it going.
Same here as well. I uninstalled rif and replaced its icon with Jerboa. I don't even notice the difference until the screen loads 😄
I deleted my account
Ive been here a few days the content is already a lot. Sub to communities. Start a community. Get to commenting, posting or even lurking! Be the change @[email protected]!
Once Apollo is gone for good, I’ll delete the app and that’ll be it. Reddit has too much useful info for me to block it entirely similar to Twitter. But also like Twitter, once the app is gone from my phone my usage pretty much drops to zero. I’ve already replaced Apollo with Mlem on my homepage, but I’m leaving Apollo installed until the end.
If we could implement reddit scrapers (I think stealth for reddit is one of them), it might help us to acess reddit without using the shitty app or even an account. Scrapers aren't exactly great if you want to post stuff on reddit, not that you would want to...
In /etc/hosts:
Make it the pornhub IP
The ol switcheroo
Hmmm will this work on my work laptop too?
In school, the first thing I did on my Arch Linux Laptop is to put google.com to the pornhub ip. Don't know why it should not work on any device.
Replaced RIF icon with Jerboa's one. Beat that, muscle memory
That's exactly what I did too.
Paused rif and moved Jerboa to the spot where it normally is on my launcher
I uninstalled RIF this morning. I saw when I commented on it saying that I loved using the app for reddit that I had recently started using... September 2011... Geeeeez. The feels.
rif and Relay were the two I used depending on how I was feeling that day. Excellent apps. Paid for both and I'll be sad to see them go.
Agreed. RIF hands down and several times over was my most used app of all time. It will be missed.
I added
reddit.comto my uBlock Origin blocklist!I've set a privacy redirect from Reddit to https://libreddit.pufe.org. Now I can't log in, but if people send me links then I can see what they sent. If I want to comment on things, I'll come to Lemmy.
I logged in to Reddit this morning for perhaps the last time, to extract my list of subreddit subscriptions. While I was there I noticed I had a bunch of "Reddit Coins", didn't even know that was a thing. Missed opportunity for "Creddits" IMO.
Thanks for the reminder. I need to get my subscription list. I like the redirect idea too.
That's... why I'm here.
i use libredirect
The fact that I'm digging lemmy is helping. Feels new and adventurous.
With most subs gone dark there's basically no content anyway. I'll probably keep checking until RiF stops working. I'm never going to use the official app or website.
Yeah the fact that I'd have to download a new app and find a new flow if I stayed makes it a lot easier to leave.
I'm not really concerned about avoiding it. Most of the subreddits with content I'd want to read are or will be closed. I only am using the old site, logged out, and with an adblocker. I'm a negative value visitor.
Uninstalled Apollo (Christian plz forgive me). Deleted my account.
I uninstalled Sync for Reddit on my Android phone.
I'm going to backup the content I created over the years and fry my account in the afternoon.
Oh, man. Should I do this? It seems so outlandish I just might do it.
Easy, I just deleted my 10+ years Reddit account.
No regrets, and am now having fun exploring the fediverse.
I should be considering deleting my account as well. The low karma doesn't allow me to shitpost
I deleted the app I was using to browse reddit (Infinity) and have blocked reddit.com system-wide on my computer. Admittedly this is a bit overkill for me but it's an easy solution.
Lemmy seems to cover most of the content from larger subreddits. For the smaller, or more specific communities (such as local subreddits or those for hobbies/interests) they generally have a Discord server to join.
So between Lemmy and Discord, I've eliminated the need to use Reddit at all. This isn't without it's flaws or drawbacks, but it 'scratches the Reddit itch', I guess.
Is there any list of the larger communities on here? I've hadn't had much luck just browsing all
I've been using browse.feddit.de. It provides a list of some of the largest communities across instances and allows you to search for communities as well.
I spend an unhealthy amount of time on reddit. So I realized I have to make changes. The timing of things helped me to make the decision easier.
Just curious, if your goal is to reduce internet usage, isn't spending more time here on lemmy equally detrimental to that goal?
The goal for me right now is to reduce/eliminate reddit usage as it wasn't providing anything to my life. I was just scrolling and wasting time on mostly useless content.
So far lemmy has been more interesting and engaging, additionally I prefer that it's more aligned with the open source movement.
Uninstalled Apollo and put Mlem in its spot
Reddit tries to force all mobile users to use their trash client so it will be quite easy for me to avoid Reddit cause I will never install this thing. Viva Lemmy!
I uninstalled RIF tonight and keep finding myself searching for it on my home screen lol Will get used to it eventually I guess. I'm opening Jerboa every time I catch myself to retrain myself.
I only browsed Reddit through Apollo so it will be very easy for me to stop using Reddit. There’s no way I’m downloading their awful app.
I added an iOS shortcut automation to my iPhone. If I open Apollo, the shortcut runs and sends me to Mlem, then pops up a reminder.
I’ve exported my posts and comments. Just need to get my subscriptions list and I’m done.
I plan to overwrite my comments and posts with a text that explains why the original is removed. That way, for as long as Reddit survives, there’s a chance someone will see it and learn about how not to screw over your user base.
Not having a mobile app will automatically curtail a lot of my usage. I'll probably keep using the desktop site though until they kill off old Reddit.
I might just dump it altogether, I only lurk anyway and the communities I subscribe to are mainly for humor. I haven't checked it in several days now.
Put a 1 minute usage limit a day, this makes the icon greyed out and reminds me
Kept a note at my home screen about Reddit Black Out. And logged out of Infinity. Now, everytime I unlock my phone, I see that note and open Lemmy🥂
I deleted Reddit from my phone, and the mobile site is shite, so I won't be going on there.
I occasionally look at old Reddit on my computer, but I just put Lemmy in it's place on my tab bar. Works great so far.
I moved the RedditSync app out of my main icons but still caught myself opening up Sync.
However nothing could load because I created a block rule on my router just in case.
Side note: I almost never posted on my 10+ years of using Reddit because by the time I saw a thread it would have hundreds of responses. Here I find it much more natural to reply to posts.
I'm sucking at it. I keep sneaking over there to check for new modmails begging to be "let in" to the subreddits etc.
I installed a "focus" app on my phone. I set it to prevent launches of Boost (my third party app of choice) and the Reddit app (which I installed a while back and never bothered getting rid of) for the next two days.
When I try to launch either app, the focus app will tell me that I can't. I tested it this morning just to make sure it was working. Now, even if I try to visit Reddit out of force of habit, I'll have blocked myself from going there.
If you're like me and have a giant smorgasbord of resources in your saved posts, I'd recommend going ahead and migrating them to your local files. I've just been copy pasting mine into a word document, but there are probably better ways
Deleted the RIF app, pretend that Reddit turned into Lemmy, make it work.
I unsubscribed to every subreddit that didn’t acknowledged they’d take part of the blackout yesterday. I’ve opened the app once today and was greeted with a “Reddit is killing 3rd party apps (and itself)” post and got reminded to exit the app right away.
Just delete it from your phone
I will, but I have a hard time separating from my Apollo icon it looks superb imo with my background
Just change Lemmy's icon to that
I just moved my Joey icon off my home page and replaced it with the icon for Jerboa.
Now I come here instead of reddit.
Annoyingly, I googled something today and clicked the first result but it was a reddit link for a privated sub... I'm going to need to update my default search to include -site:reddit.*
Made a redirect command in Redirector on Chrome, moved Relay off screen and set the Lemmy Chrome "app" where Relay used to be.
Got a slight headstart before the Blackout and Lemmy is already really growing on me
Uninstalled the app, blackholed the domain in my Pi-hole servers, and removed the domain from my web search results on my SearxNG server. I use Wireguard from my phone when out and about, so I'm always usnig Pi-hole and SearxNG.
How did you do this? Didn't realize that was possible.> pp, blackholed the domain in my Pi-hole servers, and removed the domain from my web search results on my SearxNG serve
Found it: https://github.com/searxng/searxng/issues/1258#issuecomment-1146883879
Yep - great feature. I've been excluding Facebook and the other socials for a while now.
I just deleted/hid the Apollo app and put Mlem in the same spot in my app list. Now when my muscle memory goes to open up Reddit, I’m on lemmy instead
So is mlem just for apple? I tried searching for it and only found jerboa which I do like just fine.
Not avoiding yet, but I just cut my subscribed subreddits by about half. Should reduce my time there.
Reddit has a ton of useful knowledge on it, why would I avoid it? It is not just a platform to doomscroll on... As a social media platform it's as good as dead for me, but it is still a hyper forum with many worthwhile communities.
To show your support to the blackout while it lasts?
It's a bit like going to work despite the strike.
Oh I thought OP talked about avoiding reddit in general. I have already visited it at least 3 times today looking for a solution to my laptop's inability to connect to the internet :P I haven't thought of avoiding it to send a message, I guess I will simply turn of the computer. I have already deleted Boost for reddit so I will simply not visit it on my phone...
