No, for the same reason I haven't been interested in a long time; no promises for software updates. My Zenphone 6 got 1 update.

Awww fuck. This was an instant buy for me until I read that. Maaan. Why they gotta fuck shit up like that? It doesn't even seem like it'd be terribly hard to implement. Fuck I was so excited for a few minutes. Finally a smaller and powerful phone. And coming at a time when I am looking at replacements. 'No Updates.' Fucking DOA. Dammit.

Agreed I was disappointed as well. Really like my ZF6 otherwise.

Aaaah shame, I'm looking for a replacement for my old S8 and found nothing in my criteria so far.

Maybe the new HTC.

Also: hello world \o/

I was really hyped for the Zenfone 9 since it had all the features i wanted, and the 10 seems to be just as stunning. I wouldn't even mind paying the higher price for some unique features in a small package, but two years of updates for a flagship is a big no for me.

Got a pixel 6a instead for half the price and five years of updates, directly from the source.

See, that's the thing for me the pixel 6a and 7a are missing several featues, most notably they have low storage space (only up to 128gb). This may be plenty for most, but it is not for me.

4

I don't see myself going above 60 gigs used storage in the future anyway, mostly used for spotify downloads, so you would be right about that. But a better screen (more than 60hz), wireless charging, faster charging in general, better accessibility because of the size and button scroll feature, easier to open and replace the battery... I'm sure I could go on with features this phone had and the new one will have which were reasons for me to consider it, but the update policy for that price is just ridiculous to me.

But then again different folks different priorities.

2

Same for me. Zenfone 9 is almost twice the price of Pixel 6a and is promised half the years of updates... Plus I get to try Graphene OS with the Pixel. But I would have preferred Zenfone 9's more compact form for my baby sized hands.

2

Am comparing with the Samsung S23. Surprised to find they are same size, but main pros of Zenfone for me are the much larger battery and 3.5mm jack. Cons are sadly the software side which are the deal breaker for me and I'll stick with samsung.

11

Asus needs to fix it's software support then I'm sure a ton more users would make the switch

I'd reconsider them personally.

6

Who isn't hyped for pea soup green phone with no years of support and a giant ass camera that will resolve skin pores like craters on the moon before filtering it smooth as a dolphins ass anyway. Can't wait.

For me my current Asus Zenfone 8 was the very last Asus product I am touching, I am hating this phone whenever I just unlock it. The size and headphone jack originally motivated me for this phone, the camera lacks so much (compared to my old Huawei P20 Pro), the phone is not super fast and hangs quite often, battery is completely garbage and the phone gets really hot with a few simple tasks. My next phone will be Huawei again, with or without Google, I don't even care anymore I just don't wanna hate my phone anymore every single day lol

Most of your issues sound like they stem from the Snapdragon 888 tbh

2

Maybe you are right but after hating on this phone for so long, I will buy a Huawei again. The camera is so incredibly bad, not sure if that can be pinned to the processor too but the battery life and heat I fully agree.

1

Hardware-wise? Yes, I'm interested but until they prove they can ship updates consistently I'll never touch Asus.

5

Yes definitely. The Asus ZenFone 9 was one of the best devices of 2022. I won't be buying the 10 because I only just got an Xperia 10iii in December, but always glad to see compact phones with a headphone jack.

I'll wait for reviews. I thought the Zenphone 9 looked really cool but didn't review too well.

4

Wasn't it mostly battery life concerns related to their choice of SOC, and camera not being quite up to scratch? Seems like they've addressed both and upgraded the battery.

2

Honestly it looks pretty amazing.

The loss of microSD expansion is massively disappointing, but if they release a version with 1TB of storage I could probably go this direction. It has everything else that I want.

I have literally been calculating if the 512GB version would work for me :) Not sure if they will be releasing a 1TB version, but if so, that would be a definite purchase for me.

3

Kind of messed up that they've ditched the MicroSD to be honest. I find it fairly disappointing that ASUS have gone down that road too. At least they've retained the 3.5mm jack.

1

Yeah I figure if you're going to keep the headphone jack you might as well go all in and keep the SD card. You will win a lot of goodwill from a certain crowd right there. Half of me almost wants to buy the Nord n30 just because it includes both even though I don't need a phone! I'm not going to cuz I still have a perfectly functional LG v60, G8X but when those phones are too old to continue to give music players/phones I really hope to be able to reward someone with my purchase that has both of those.

Obviously there's Sony but I'm kind of priced out there

lemmy.world

Honest question - why would you need such massive storage?

My perspective is that I have 64gb model. Prob 30-50% takes spotify offline sings and everything the rest for media (videos/photos). Everything is backed up and when I run out of space - I clean my local storage. I am wondering why would you need 512GB/1TB of storage?

2

Perhaps carrying a large collection of FLACs or PS2/Wii/Switch ROMs.

2

I'm glad they decided to stick with the 5.9 in variant there was a rumor there and go up to 6.3 in. I really wish ASUS would give a longer commitment to security patches. Not even necessarily OS upgrades. I don't really care if I have the latest version of Android so much as I just want a device where I don't have to worry about security.

Promise me at least 3 or 4 years of security patches and that would probably make the ZenFone 10 my next phone.

I don't know. Has Asus already officially confirmed that the Zenfone 10 won't have an SD card slot? I hope it will still be present in the Zenfone 10.

Has Asus’ build quality improved? I read that it tanked after Lenovo bought the company.

2
lemmy.world

I think you're mixing these up; Lenovo bought Motorola.

EDIT: Oh, you double posted. Lol

1

Yeah, I've been beta-testing a Lemmy app on my iPhone and it's not perfect and it had an issue which caused me to accidentally double- and triple-post.

2

Absolutely. Tempted to sell my S23 for one. It all depends on how they handle various things, but it all sounds good so far. I'm happy with my S23 but I want to put my money where my mouth is and support a company like Asus for doing the compact flagship thing right.

2

Will it be released in India? They did not release 9z in India. I was looking forward to it.

How is LineageOS nowadays? The last time I tried (like 1 year ago), it was a massive "bugfuck" with loads of bugs, such as unable to change operator when abroad, lagging when switching recents and so on. Did not like at all.

1
feddit.it

It is heavily dependent on the build and for which phone. Im on a 2016 phone running android 13 and it is working amazingly

1
lemmy.world

Tried on OnePlus 9 pro. Currently on Pixel, very happy with default experience. But yeah, I've heard each phone usually has a single maintainer, so it makes sense that quality is a bit low... ✌️

1

I thought leaks had suggested that the phone will be >6" this time around? Has it been confirmed to be sub 6 now? I was very interested in the 9, but ultimately camera performance and update policy pushed me in another direction.
I had read the >6 rumor a while back so being closer to launch I guess 5.9 is more reliable? The only source the article mentions is winfuture.de and I don't know much about the site

Are you thinking of Motorola? Lenovo makes phones under the Motorola brand, not Asus

5

Yeah, I was.

I just looked it up and you’re right. I think I just got confused because I had read about Motorola and Asus both having quality control issues.

3
lemmy.world

Its definitly not a device for me since I even think my Galaxy S22 Ultra is a bit small, but I always appreciate phones that push the envelope and this truly does for compact phones.

1

Agreed, I've been looking for a phone with a chassis that roughly matches my beloved Xperia Z Ultra for years. But nobody makes big phones (6.9inch+) any more, save some china only play store-less dead ends.

2

Not a fan of Asus phones, been with a Zenfone before, their software is lacking compared to Samsung or Google.
