Who's finishing Voyager today?

2 episodes left. I've now seen TNG, DS9, and VOY. Next should I got back and watch TOS or TAS? Or boldly go forward and watch Enterprise? I've never heard anyone mention Enterprise.

First thought after finishing: what the fuck happened to Samantha Wildman?

Ah, you're getting to the good episode where Admiral Janeway and Captain Janeway go back in time to kill Tuvix together. Good times.

6

Was that before or after they contracted the Borg to blow up the Vulcan home world?

4

Enterprise is decent; at the time it was regarded poorly because it wasn't more TNG/DS9/Voy but it gets better with each season and by the end you are left wanting more and wish it hadn't been cut short.

Enterprise is way above the modern stuff like Discovery. Strange New Worlds started very well but I haven't seen the latest season of that.

Strange New Worlds started very well but I haven’t seen the latest season of that.

it has the classic episodic format and i liked it. some of the "out of the box" episodes were little too much out of the box, but when the episode was good, it was just good old trek.

I finally got to S4 and Seven of Nine just yesterday. I've heard this is where it grows the beard so I'm curious to see how it progresses.

4

Just make sure you don't forget about lower decks, they do make a lot of references to TOS so maybe that one

Watch some TOS!

Just go into it with an open mind. It was started in 1966. This was before we’d even landed on the moon for first time. Women’s Liberation hadn’t really taken off, and the US Civil Rights fight was still ongoing. Doctors were still claiming that smoking was healthy.

It was another world and Gene was looking to the future. So, don’t go into it expecting miracles. There are some good episodes, and some really, really bad ones, but I still highly recommend it.

Gene was looking to the future.

the future with little bit of good old sexism on top.

Ive seen all of trek and this is what I recommend to watch.

Ent > TOS > Tas > lower decks

Lower decks should be last as they make so many references to the other shows.

Enterprise is actually pretty good, it’s just the intro song is pretty bad and I think that turns people off.

To stay in the 90s trek vibe, I recommend you watch The Orville. It’s a really amazing show that captures the spirit of Trek.

If you enjoy away mission episodes, then watch the Stargate Sg-1 it’s pretty amazing.

Yeah, the intro song makes me want to eject the DVD from the player.

The actual episodes are pretty watchable.

3

Archer team, which plays during the ending credits kind of aligns to the intro videos so I think that was the original plan for the song and they probably changed it last minute. I wish I had a version where they just swapped those two songs.

Voyager and enterprise are kind of on the same level for me but I also got bored of being stuck on the delta quadrant by the time voyager was over, and when enterprise started I was upset it wasn't star trek enough.

I also watched them in chronological order so my partner switched me away from deep space nine when it was at its peak so we could start voyager iirc. So I partially blame my bias against voyager on that.

Both series I just didn't care for the characters that much besides the doctors. And seven of nine! Voyager won me back when we got seven of nine, and enterprise picked up for me near the end and I sort of retrospectively appreciated it.

Oof yeah those last episodes of voyager are rough. Growing up with TOS nostalgia keeps me from being able to give an objective opinion on it. But I will say this. If you are enjoying some of these other series, it spawned them all for a reason. Enterprise was okay. I wouldn't rate it any harsher than most the rest of the series. Though the opening interstitial and theme are pretty solid.

I haven't watched much past enterprise myself or the first couple of seasons of DS9, which I hear were some of the worst of the series. Too little Jeffry Combs you know.

14

Maybe 7 years ago I asked my partner about stark trek and eventually she talked me into watching everything in cronological order and I think TOS holds up. Ds9 is also top on my list so I would recommend just sticking through it.

4

Should warn that S1 - especially the first half - is extremely rough, but it's worth sitting through because things get so much better.

Shame it's effectively dead.

2

The Orville is definitely a TNG love letter. To be in the world/s where there could have been a crossover.

Watch Enterprise. It's a divisive show in the community, mostly because it made a decision to be "sexier" and then got dark in response to 9/11, not to mention the whole theme song debacle or the must skip series finale...

However, there is also a lot of good Trek in there and some insight into humanity post First Contact but pre Federation. You owe it to yourself as a fan to at least give it a chance.

Why should one skip the series finale..? I'm in the last couple of episodes and indeed considering just skipping to the next series. But I've watched everything up until this

2

It's just awful. The second to last episode includes a good little speech from Archer that really works as a bookend of the show. Then the last episode completely crashes and burns trying to bookend the entirety of 90s Trek. If it's your first time, you kinda have to watch it, but just know a lot of people (myself included) don't consider it canon and skip it on every rewatch. It's that bad.

When you say sexy, does that only mean women? If you tell me there are nude male aliens I'll start right now before even finishing Voyager.

It's probably more evenly split than VOY. The show builds in a reason for everyone to get semi-naked and it leads to some pretty egregious scenes for the male 18-49 demographic, but there are plenty of cases with shirtless or underwear clad men too. Everyone on the show is attractive and fit even by TV standards.

Do you mean straight male demographic? In my universe, all sexualities are assumed gay unless otherwise specified. I don't want to get all thirsty just to be surprised by stout, intelligent, fertile bodies that deserve to be clothed and leading the country.

That being said, your contribution has determined the course and is greatly appreciated.

2

Haha, I phrased it that way to note that it was a ratings decision. Anyway, hope you like it.

2

I’m a huge fan of TOS, and never managed to finish Enterprise. That said, if your plan is to watch it all, it probably makes sense to wrap up the Berman era with Enterprise. Then I’d jump back to TOS before moving on to Discovery and forward.

6

It’s a change of pace, but Lower Decks is really good (and if you watch Enterprise first, you’ll get even more of the references!)

1

Oh hey im on the last two eps of Voyager too! Just waiting for a good chance to watch them without interruption.

TOS is solid and you should watch it at least once. I actually liked Enterprise more than I expected. Its got the Rick Berman problem of leering at T'Pol in skin-tight outfits (or rubbing lotion on her in decontamination) but otherwise it wasn't bad. Except for when they changed Faith of the Heart, that really annoyed me.

Ive started TAS but havent gotten back to it yet, but what I saw was a decent continuation of TOS. Watch TOS first though

8

You cant go wrong really, but I'd like to speak for enterprise. Yes, it is a step down in most ways, but not as far down as people seem to say. It does have an absolutely god awful opening song and sequence, but the show itself is pretty decent. I really like a lot of the characters, and it is very driven compared to a lot of the other series'. I grew up with stargate so it felt extremely similar to that given as the crew is just winging it all the time and there's no such thing as the prime directive.

5
lemmy.world

Have you watched the TNG movies yet? Those are next.

After that: TOS then TAS

5

Ooh that's a good idea I hadn't thought of. This might be the winner.

4

I'd say Enterprise. It's a step up in quality from Voyager, you can finish that era of television, it's a bit rounder overall.

2

If you go back, brace yourself for campy dated silly. Forward, thinly veiled 'merica but still fun. Assuming you'd like to eventually see it all, probably best to go with TOS-TAS.

It's severely underrated... what doesn't mean it's good.

13

The first couple of series are pretty good.

Then it hard-pivoted into being a thinly veiled analogy for 9/11, and America's response to it.

Viewed with today's eyes, without the background noise of the war in Afghanistan, it seems like a deranged direction to take the show in - but it was absolutely of its time.

Like I said, though, I think the first two series are good.

You reached the end
