Reminding the voters that once again the tariffs are not necessary or for national security and can be turned on and off at Trump's whim because people like their current senator are pieces of shit? Bold strategy.

Trump added a number of Canadian products to the 50% tariff list to offset the tariff relief provided in his order, including carpets, paints, waste, shampoos, cocoa powder, wooden coffins, ice cream sticks, air-conditioning machines, chest freezers, archery equipment and canoes.

The headline doesn't tell the whole story: Trump removed tariffs from same Canadian products, and added tariffs to others. This is strictly to help Collins, not provide any improvement in the US's relationship with Canada.

Remember when they made Jimmy Carter sell his peanut farm? Pepperidge farms remembers.

24

Apparently he didn't sell it till after his presidency, in 1981. Not to take away from the point you're making, though..

Carter put his peanut farm into a blind trust during the presidency – he didn't sell it.

Trump's order exempted plywood sheets, some paper products, certain machinery and refrigeration equipment, and packing crates and boxes, as well as fresh and dried seaweed, the White House said.

Ottawa should play an Uno Reverse card and put export tariffs on all of these goods equal to exactly what trump just removed keeping the price of these goods exactly the same to Maine voters. Canada can use the tariff revenue to subsidize other Canadian goods trump has put import tariffs on to help out those Canadian industries.

Dominic LeBlanc, Canada's minister responsible for trade with the US, said Ottawa was assessing Trump's latest tariff change. "Canada stands ready to work constructively and in good faith towards a more mutually beneficial trading relationship that respects Canada's interests," LeBlanc said in a statement

I hope this means export tariffs from Canada.

No, that would do the opposite. Import tariffs are paid by the buyer and export tariffs are paid by the seller. It would still raise the price for the end customer, but at Canadians' expense instead of at Americans' expense.

Think beyond step one.

I'm highly confident the Canadian sellers would feel no need to do the US buyer any favors, by shouldering the export tariffs. In response to the creation of export tariffs, Canadian sellers would raise their prices the account for the new costs, those costs would be passed onto US buyers. Because the net price of the item the US buyer is paying doesn't change, the US buyers wouldn't even bat an eye and simply pay it like they always do.

While a business owner might have a mild interest in the geopolticial reason for an expense, to the business, the reason is immaterial. The result is what matters; how much the invoice is to get X input the business requires. If they have previously been paying $5 extra per unit to the US Government for import tariffs, and that disppears but the price of the item from Canada goes up $5 (because the Canadian seller raised the price to cover the new export tariffs the seller is paying), the end resulting price to being the exact same and it is simply business as usual to the US buyer. In this case here, if the US buyer's price doesn't even change, I'm not even sure they'd notice.

I read that as "Trump hates American timber producers et al."

If the Republicans are going to engage in blatantly dishonest spin, turnabout is fair play.

Export tarrifs is a sketchy game to start playing. We still buy a bunch of food and other important stuff from the USA. I try not to, but I wouldnt want to impact food security.

Maybe the people selling tge specialized stuff to farmers just increase their price for Americans. This is definitely a situation where we the individuals have the collective power to fuck them.

Was is for Collins, or because the separatists lost?

14

Jokes on them, I already early voted for Troy! I still wouldn't have voted for her anyway.

On a related note, my Susan Collins mailer collection has graduated from tablecloth to wallpaper.

4

The mailers this election season are absolutely fucking unreal. I literally got 11 of them in a single day. My mailman was shaking his head as he was gathering them to drop in my mail box. I'm still getting bombarded with texts, junk mail, phone calls, etc. long after I voted early, also for Troy.

Easiest ballot I ever casted - straight D votes. So tired of the brain-damaged, shameless conservative agenda, egregious lies, support only for the rich and complete lack of support for 90% of Americans. Fuck MAGA, fuck Trump, fuck Hegseth, fuck Stephen Miller and fuck you, Susan Collins, for supporting all of them blindly you sad, worthless coward of a human being. I hope this election makes you concerned for yourself.
