Turn membrane button into mechanical button?
I'm sure this is sort of a dumb question, but can I just solder mechanical buttons to the contacts on a membrane button? As I understand it, that would still complete the path.

yes (just be careful to not short them with solder and make sure to mechanically reinforce the new button, the PCB traces are easy to pull off the board if you tug on them too hard)
Oh cool! My plan was to use this to turn a neat Bluetooth keyboard shell mechanical so the reinforcement was baked in from the start!
