So I've been seeing this meme in different permutations constantly these past days, and I couldn't find an explanation for it searching online. What's the joke exactly if someone might be so kind to explain?

You know how when you're setting your email password, it needs to have at least 8 characters? Because the longer the password, the harder it is to crack.

The importance of security of your email is important for you, sure, but there's Very Important Stuff that has to do with the safety of all of internet and compared to that it's completely insignificant. Nobody cares. This Very Important Stuff is supposed to be locked using a number with over 160 digits. It needs to be perfectly secure.

Well, someone used 4. And I don't mean four digits. The "password" was literally just the number 4.

I actually found the article reporting on this while I kept browsing Lemmy, so I did end up finding out about this. But thank you for your additional very eli5 explanation :) ✨

You're welcome. I was afraid explaining it like this might come off as patronising, but the fact is that this is how I understand it so I couldn't really explain it in any other way =P

I get the sentiment - it's a thin line to walk for sure. I appreciated it :)
