I smell the desperation. No one has money, stop advertising.

america/russia/china/israel...it's all just a deflection while the real ruthless overlords take over...Advertisers!!

I've taken to just buying DRM free books and hosting them on my jellyfin for family to read, along with the couple thousand I already own.

It must be so easy to be a CEO...

  • Company doing well, has record profits? Raise prices, cut services, increase mandatory ads in everything, collect bonus.
  • Company not doing well doing because no one has any money? Raise prices, cut services, increase mandatory ads in everything, layoff workers, collect bonus.

You forgot to layoff workers in the first scenario. Please resign with your golden parachute.

The price for Disney+ through my Plex has stayed remarkably stable and ad free.

20

I wish Plex wasn't obviously trying to kill off everything good, word is they laid off everyone handling Plex Desktop.

its a red flag when they are pulling back alot of movies/show development. they know thier slop isnt paying the bills for the streaming service, which is hemmorhaging money.

Hmm if only there was some way to prevent companies from having so much power over a market that they can control the price. There’s gotta be a name for that.

46

Oh man, what is the name for that? This is going to monopolize my thoughts until I remember the word.

Is it armed revolution? Say it's armed revolution.

They already call people who make copies of media, pirates. They're basically just asking for it.

Just drop the subs. Call it the November challenge. You have to find some screen free way to entertain yourself for the month.

ETA: it’s not as difficult as you may think.

A library card is free and has decades of good TV and movies that I haven't seen yet.

Thrift shops and garage sales have movies and seasons of shows for a couple bucks or less each.

A kid can be handed a big empty cardboard box and they'll entertain themselves.

There really is no good reason to pay for streaming, except maybe to watch sports, but, you're not getting what you pay for there, either, because you can't buy a season to watch any more since they sell the rights to games across several different platforms.

Fuck em. Sports on the radio, TV on a disk.

3

I’m not even saying forever. Drop the ads stream services and force yourself to find other things at the same time.

The worst part is so many people treat streaming like a gym membership. They have it just in case and then rarely use it.

3

I wonder what the profit margins on streaming services are? I mean bandwidth is pretty cheap in this day and age, so it's gotta be astronomically profitable.

Asking for a friend, is Mullvad sufficient to pirate "safely enough" ? I'm tired of paying these pedo-enabling and fascist billionaires and corporations.

4
lemmy.world

Okay well TIL. I was trying to learn. What do you recommend using?

6

I've heard good things about airvpn, now we just sit back and wait for someone to tell us why we shouldn't use it.

I'm still on mullvad because I paid for a full year a while back and it hasn't expired yet, but I'll probably switch to airvpn in a couple of months.

3

Honestly I'm not much better at the moment, I've got a Proton subscription (don't know who Andy is giving money to, but he's made pro-Trump comments in the past) that doesn't run out for a bit yet since I've been doing 2 years at a time, I've tried PIA in the past and it's fine, but I'm sick of their marketing. I've heard good things about AirVPN and IVPN but haven't personally tried them out yet

1

Used it for years. No issue of notice. Sure you can't port forward, but I don't know what's really needed for because I don't seem to have any problem downloading things so never bothered investigating.

2

I've had a good experience with Torguard. When I looked into Mullvad I found they didn't support port forwarding (unless this has changed recently?).

Well, I guess ya had a good run Disney. Now you'll get added to the maybe I'll activate it if there's something I really want to watch rotation with peacock, hulu, and other shit tier apps.
