AI: EU Member States approve “digital expropriation” for AI companies

On Wednesday, EU Member States approved a change to the GDPR that would put the profit-making interests of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceX over European's fundamental right to data protection. According to the approved text, processing personal data “in the context of AI” should automatically be lawful. In particular, Big Tech would be able to use all personal data collected over the past decades with virtually no restrictions, as long as this happens “in the context” of AI. Schrems: “Under the agreed text, the profits of AI companies would typically trump European’s fundamental right to privacy. This is nothing but a digital expropriation of Europeans.” All this is happening despite the key figures of AI corporations actively warning about the enormous risks associated with their own products.

This law is only a proposal for the moment, the parliament still needs to vote on it. It must be stopped. Contact your MEPs.

Contact your MEPs.

And let them know you're building an AI that aggregates PII from all MEPs into one database that will be open to the public. Totally legal now.

On top of the very obvious, there is also the matter of: what foes it mean “in the context of AI”? If I have a little LLM running on my PC, can I steal your data?

no, you need at least Another Indian across the ocean stealing it

Doesn‘t seem like it‘s compatible with the German constitution so yeah kind of criminal for German politicians to vote in favor of it if you ask me. Not sure how it is in other places but I am sure Germany can‘t be the only EU country with deeply embedded privacy rights.

So how does this affect the GDPR AI stuff? Would it be impossible got Germany to allow AI crave outs?

the Council (representing EU Member States) on Wednesday approved that companies should generally be permitted to do basically anything when using personal data "in the context of AI". This means that the commercial interests of AI companies would generally trump the fundamental rights of users. This general allowance would also apply to people who have never been customers of an AI company and to data entered decades ago, for example in chats or on social media. All personal data that an AI company can somehow get its hands on would fall under the provision.

Insanity

Disgracefull as if AI companies hadnt and werent committing intelectual property theft at an eggregious scale, now they can lawfully violate the privacy of EU citizens

"EU member states approve..." Always this vague wording so as to imply some sort of democracy. It's the EU oligarchy that has approved this.

Could they claim "EU citizens approve..."? Of course not.

Fuck the EU oligarchy, and even more fuck us EU sheep citizens that don't rebel against this. We get what we silently accept. Let's bow our heads.

Sovereignty ? Anyone ?

The EU construction is a joke, a more efficient way to serve the globalist elites and mega-corpos and circumvent scrutiny and accountability by national parliaments.

Which sovereign countries, do you think, would have implemented something like the GDPR if the EU Parliament did not exist?

Assuming you see the GDPR - the right to control personal information - as a good thing, as I do.

You reached the end
