I love filters
::: spoiler personal context
Originally a programming.dev user. A lot of posts there talk about a certain topic that has a 20% chance to inflict psychic damage on me, set me in a mental tailspin, and look up articles and thinkpieces about it (not credible academic articles) to the detriment to the rest of my day and my personal efforts to make peace with or otherwise deal with that topic, since those posts are often doomy. Blocking communities and unsubbing does not help, it pops up in almost every one. (I am actually considering therapy over this, but for now this is a great fix.)
Hop over to PieFed. Put keyword filter on for that topic. Able to look at programming.dev again. Bliss, as it has been on other sites that let you filter. :::
Thank you so much. As far as I know you are the first Threadiverse platform to let it happen (vs Lemmy and Kbin/Mbin). Thank you again so so much.

I am a big proponent of people making more use of curation tools available to them. I too often see people browsing the
Allfeed and then complaining about seeing too much of one type of content or some content that they don't like.As an aside, I was in a matrix room a little over a year ago with one of the lemmy.world admins and the conversation was about instance blocks. They provided some stats on how many instance blocks existed among lemmy.world users, and the most-blocked instance had 730 lemmy.world users blocking it. Out of all of their 150,000+ users, the most-blocked instance only had less than 800 blocks against it. I was just surprised because it seemed like a shockingly small value given the size of the userbase.
In any case, glad the filters are doing the trick for you!
I do wonder just how many downvotes are inappropriately given by folks browsing all who do not like spiders, so the most anodyne, appropriate spider picture on !spiders gets a downvote. No big deal if !spiders is big such that 60 upvotes drown out the drive-by downvote, but it is able to hide posts from people who would otherwise want to see it (thanks to auto-hide/collapse thresholds—or something like that—based on downvote count) if !spiders is growing and currently gets maybe 2 upvotes per post. Not just hidden from All, but also from the people trying to subscribe to !spiders!
yeah. one of the thing I block is communities where is just not really my thing. I get that people on a community about spiders is not going to appreciate comments on how one hates spiders. granted thats not me. I mean I could comment something is scary looking maybe but I doubt the folks would be that upset by that. Im sorta anti public voting anyway though. its theoretically to help people curate their feed but why would I want to curate my feed with other peoples opinion.
Some amount of public voting is helpful for very specific purposes. It's nice to have "youre a fucking [slur]" and "penis enlargement pills only $4.99 at scamsite.com" auto-hidden from me because everyone else downvoted it already before the mod could log on, see the reports, and remove it. If I encounter that, I like to think I am doing my small part to help others by reporting and downvoting so it's one step closer to getting hidden from their feeds too.
Otherwise, yeah, I do not think I want the downvotes of arachnophobes to influence the content on !spiders, nor do I want militant spider-lovers downvoting everything on !arachnophobia. Or meme-lovers auto-upvoting a funny meme on a community that bans memes because they did not read the rules and came by from All…
i don't view by voting popularity and its never been an issue for me.
This was one of the very first features I added because it's so important. It blows my mind that some other platforms don't have it.
Well, it used to until I realised why. Lemmy is not what people assume it is.
eyup. people look at it as a negative thing but people who subscribe to stuff and only look at subscribed are effectively blocking everything else. blocking is not malicious its just a way to get what you want out of the experience.
