What happened this time?
They switched to Easy Anti-Cheat. It probably killed the mod scene. And you might as well add the usual bugs, performance quirks, and misc issues.
It's not just the mod community. I causes crashes for players who weren't modded such as myself. Haven't been able to beat a mission since the update. It crashes within minutes, if not seconds of starting a game.
Haven’t they been running Easy Anti-Cheat for a year or more?
No, since the game launched they were using GameGuard. Today's patch replaced it with EAC
At least from what AH said, cosmetic mods should still work, but I've not messed with mods for the game so I wouldn't know really
Some mods, UI and audio mods in particular, have been broken as par for the course, I don't know about UI mods but audio mods are trivial to fix;
officially the devs are okay with mods that don't alter the gameplay, although some mods (such as the one for loadouts idr the name) that use scripts got caught in the crossfire
For now, though? I can hope that's the case, I guess. 😅
Save for SC models and the likes, I wouldn't count on AH deliberately breaking asset replacement mods, so at least we have that
The new update is also causing crashes... Like a lot.
Im on linux and I was barely able to drop onto a map (4 attempts, normal fiddling with proton settings) and then my windows running player 2 also crashed...killing the lobby.
me and my mate uninstalled it (cachyos) the performance is awful. Shame because it was good fun
@Bahnd Same exact experience for me on Bazzite. I can’t run a mission without a crash under 10 minutes after launching the game
Have you been able to get multiplayer working? I was playing fine for a while then like 2-3 months ago or something an update broke it or something. I can't connect to any lobbies.
I've had a similar issue, I fixed it by changing Proton versions. But since the last update all versions crash.
Unfortunately I tried that earlier. Nothing helped. Turning off cross play, and using sos beacons both failed.
CachyOS checking in, no issues prior to this patch but I'm out of town and csn't verify how it is now.
@HasturInYellow In the past 3 months yes I’ve reliably been able to play the game solo or in other lobbies without crashing, until yesterday with the new update where my game crashes within 10 minutes of launching.
Meh I don't see this campaign holding. Like sorry for not liking mods that do qualify as cheating
I mean, you're very within your right to dislike it, but how do people customizing the experience to their taste mainly in solo and private lobbies affect you in a PvE game ? I must admit I'm skeptical about arrowhead on this one, even though I play vanilla, a lot if my friends with more playtime had made the jump to UI and quality of life mods, sometimes custom difficulties too...
well as an example back in Year 1 we had a sample collection MO that some cheaters managed to fake finishing. While that particular cheat was resolved it does show a problem in having mods that are themselves cheats.
look I am not saying that improvement to this game are not needed, just that this is an online live service game where how we play does effect the campaign and story.
Think it like you and a group of friends playing a TTRPG but you decided to use weighted dice that improve your odds
Well it's funny you mention ttrpg, because most of these work through a strong interaction between all players, GM included. Thus, what matters is what is considered fun by everyone at the table, and if one person having a weighted dice somehow makes sense, the right table will allow it.
Anyway, this is secondary, the point is that the pros and con balance in this is not in the favour of arrowhead here, they "outlawed" about everything from the get go, through the questionable change of anti cheat. I definitely agree with your example of the collect mission that got cheated through, but they could have used inspiration from other titles, from lobby browser allowing mods or not, even excluding those with flagged mod from interacting in the global campaign. They could have reached the modders of the most endorsed mods, worked with them somehow. They could even have made the mod support official and integrated, thus having stronger overview of who plays with what, with strong filtering. I'm thinking of Deep Rock Galactic here for example.
I'm just saying than in a normal PvE, apart from the economic side, you can't really "cheat", as in you are not impacting others. Cooperative PvE games only have to handle how players are able to team up or not regarding their preferences (kind of like finding the tight table for a ttrpg), and there are many ways of doing so, that arrowhead has not yet shown interest towards
Brings back memories. My group had a whole set of weighted dice the dm had. The group could vote on who and when they got used but each dice could only be used once per session.
Good times.
What happened? Is this because of mods or something else? Honestly I am pretty pissed at them for how they're handling mods. Like do literally anything else. Just match people who use mods with each other or whatever there were some minor non cheating mods that I was having a blast with for the past week. And it was a good fucking week now it's over forever.
From what I've been reading in the comments here, the primary reason seems to be the game crashing a lot ever since the change to Easy Anti Cheat, even for unmodded players. I haven't played it for a few days so I don't know myself.
I can confirm. I run the game unmodded and it is downright unplayable. It crashes within seconds of starting the game. Sometimes it lasts a few minutes and lets you play. But I swear if you manage to get close to complete a mission it will crash just in time so you miss the extract and don't get your rewards.
Haven't been able to complete a mission since the update. Arrowhead seemed to prioritize going after hackers (which I have never encountered) over the game experience for everyone else.
What's the difference between the old anti cheat and the new?
Should I care at all since I don't use mods?
Lower level access to your computer given to an arbitrary company.
Outside infosec, you might experience more crashes and lower FPS.
@GrayBackgroundMusic Well my experience so far is that my PC can’t play the game for more than 5-10 minutes without a hard crash to the desktop. I don’t use mods.
Ugh that sucks.
i hope it won't cause issues on linux
I've only played a few rounds today but so far I've had no issue. OpenSuSE Tumbleweed with AMD for graphics and CPU, and Plasma with Wayland for the DE. Don't remember which proton I'm running, either Experimental or GE I think, I'll have to check
I played for a couple hours yesterday with no issues. My frame rate actually seemed better.
Pop OS, AMD CPU and GPU.
The devs changes their kernal level anticheat from... what was it netgaurd? And replaced it with easy anti cheat.
I assume this was done because easy anti cheat is bettet at collecting data to sell to AI firms. And the old one was not. The attacking modders thing is the deflection.
Devs said it won't and to report linux issues on their official Zendesk. I heard this via a YouTuber that covers the game.
@librekitty Playing on Bazzite, my game can barely make it 10 minutes without crashing. I haven’t been able to finish a mission whenever I’ve been lucky enough to even boot the game
I wonder if steam will give me a refund since this very different software than what I paid into. 🤔
Eh, tiny blip when looking at the full range, not even visible. Just a bunch of people upset they, what? Cheat?
Cosmetic mods should still be able to function, and anything beyond that doesn't belong in a multiplayer community game when you're changing the rules for yourself. Get over it.
Dude it's a PvE game, and there are quality of life issues blaring since it first launched that were fixed in weeks by solo modders, don't blame people for wanting a game working as intended Cheating is very clearly far far down on the list of reasons people mod the game
Just the usual gamerbaby rage.
It's not gamerbaby rage to be angry that Hd2 banned QoL mods and optimizations all cause they can't fix their own shit.
How do they dissallow malicous or other ways that benefit the host over other users? I gotta imagine there’s mods to remove stuff like walls or other entities to get an advantage.
It's a game against entities, who, the fuck, cares? If you don't like the players in your match you can just find a new one.
If there's a mod that gives you control over the host and prevents you from kicking them? Yeah alright, that's totally understandable, and wanting to fix that should be a goal.
They probably don't need to use EAC to achieve that though. Many better solutions have been suggested.
So I need to spend a large portion of my time gaming going in and out of lobbies or kicking people so I can have fun? Or they can just not have a disaster of a game where that’s an issue….
Are you fucking serious? Are you actually saying that Arrowhead should just relinquish control of their game completely, allow any player to hack and break the game for other players as much as they want? What kind of insane person thinks this is something any company would ever do.
@SamuraiBeandog What are you talking about? The game had been seemingly completely fine before now. I have almost 300 hours in it and I’ve never encountered any kind of mod or hacker.
Do you think it would be obvious?
People using mods are literally the source of that down bar on the chart you posted.
@SamuraiBeandog Aside from me and people like me who can’t play the game because it can’t run for 10 minutes without crashing. And no I have never modded the game
I'm sitting here reading the other turkey's comments and I'm thinking he hasn't even considered his own position, he's just spewing words.
Truly insane takes, a level of delusion and entitlement you rarely see. And just completely unabashed about it.
I have. You all seem to think only cheaters play with mods, for a game that's against NPC's which gives zero advantage to playing with them. You all just don't mind eating arrowheads boot if it doesn't affect you :).
That is not at all what I said. They could provide lobbies for modded only clients, and those with no mods. Boom, both parties happy. Modders can continue to have such QoL stuff, cosmetics, and what ever else they may like. No bother to you at all.
That's also only one solution that doesn't resort to needing to ban them and use an entirely different anti cheat client.
Ban the cheaters getting SC easily, or ruining other players game. I just highly doubt that's a high % of the moding community.
Or don’t allow malicious mods to begin with….? You can’t allow “QOL” without allowing the problematic ones. And what’s QOL to you, would be considered cheating by someone else.
Oh the grass is distracting or is causing me to not be able to see, bye bye grass. Now you can see people you normally couldn’t.
But of course if your head is so far up your ass you won’t see an issue with this.
You don't play the game do you? It's versus NPC's. There are no other players to shoot by getting rid of the grass.
Like I said, there's been far better solutions offered that allow the best of worlds by smarter people, which certainly isn't you
This is an insane take. There's no way to filter out what mods are "good" vs "bad". It's an online game, players thinking that they should have carte blanche to modify the game for other players is the height of entitlement. Only a baby is this completely self centered.
Then you should read their actual post since they're actually happy with some of the mods that have come out, and I do truly hope that the ones that are good for the community are not banned.
I don't have faith that using EAC will achieve that, and also believe other solutions are available. Oh well though, killing off a community inside your online game is always a great idea right?
The entire point is that they can't differentiate between which mods are good and bad. Cosmetic only mods will probably be fine because they don't change game behaviour and are fundamentally different from gameplay mods.
The game will be fine, the vocal minority in the community has these tantrums every few months and then everything goes back to normal.
So add a server browser like Deep Rock Galactic.
