Amsterdam hopes 20km/h cycle lane limit will change behaviour - DutchNews.nl

Amsterdam city council has introduced an experimental speed limit of 20km/h for cyclists to see if riders can be persuaded to slow down.

Tourists, commuters and shoppers have all complained in recent years of feeling unsafe on the capital’s congested bike paths, but the only speed restriction is a 30 km/h limit for motor vehicles.

More fietsstraaten. This problem goes away if we get rid of the damn cars going through the city. Once we have enough space, then everyone can go the speed they like without issue. Like, I don't want to be an asshole to the people riding side-by-side with their friends having a chat, but I'm running late and you're in the way and the fietspad is very narrow in some places.

I guarantee that the 20 km/h limit will not stop tourists from walking into the bike lanes.

But if they can use it crack down on the people riding like jerks on e-motos, that would be amazing.

20 kmh would kill me, especially if I'm getting to somewhere I need to be like work, instead of slow sightseeing/tourism. Surely, there can be a way to have a faster zone, slower zone and pedestrian/walking lane. Some of the roads here are largely unnecessary for cars and could be fully ceded to bikes and pedestrians.

20km/h is pretty slow. I haven’t been to Amsterdam; but comparing NYC to a few European cities, NYC has much better signage. I suspect better signage would help the situation here; especially for people who don’t speak the common languages
