We have a young candidate on city council in my hometown who genuinely cares, works hard, and pushes for fresh ideas and popular development. Unfortunately, the old guard, some of whom have been there for over 30 years, seems to oppose everything he proposes. He wanted to renovate our aging auditorium, a vital part of the community, arguing it would be cheaper than building a completely new project. Council rejected the idea then voted to spend millions on new pickleball courts. It’s frustrating to see the old members who have done so many counter productive things for the city just push for stupid shit they like.
that's the point. people pursue their self-interest.
if you want change you need more young people to run and win elections in your town. the old folks will cling to power and stay in in until death in pursuit of their own interests.
if you want to push for things you like, you have to get involved. and lots of other folks in your town will think the shit you like is stupid.
Fenriz of pioneering Norwegian black-metal band Darkthrone was elected to his town council on the platform of “don't vote for me”.
Fenriz said: "They called and asked if I wanted to be on the list [of backup representatives]. I said yeah, thinking I would be like 18th on the list and I wouldn't really have to do anything". His "campaign" was a photo of him holding his cat with the caption "Please Don't Vote For Me".
Lol, sounds like how I would run a political campaign. Heck, I've always felt the best leaders are the ones who don't want to lead, but are forced into it by others. This is a close second I guess.
If most of the other people running did so on platforms that many of the citizens consider actively detrimental, or have personally pissed enough people off, I could easily see someone who's proclaimed he doesn't much care getting elected. (Hell, under those circumstances, I could see a pet rock getting elected.)

his platform is remarkably human!

The article doesn't do him justice. His platform is really well thought out and has some progressive ideas.

The man is an inspiration. Barely, but it’s what we need and deserve.
