I recently cut my parents out of my life after trying one last time to talk to them. I cannot stress enough how hard having no hobbies or interests fucks me up. like I thought I liked pc games, but it turns out i was just using it as an escape.

now that there’s nobody over my shoulder to get angry at me for my preferences I don’t know how to function.

edit: a word >~<

As a temporary fix, I would advise a ā€œfake it till you make itā€ approach. Think about something you would like to like, and dive into it. In a while, you can reconsider and either keep going or drop it for something else.

NGL that sounds like a good idea. i’ve got a backpack and stuff for hiking. never got around to it yet but that may be fun!

I have an AI rig at home but that topic gets you tarred and feathered in current year. not the best hobby anyways because it’s a PITA to get performance out of.

Wait, that's "faking it"?

Well shit, that's how like ... 80% of my hobbies started. The rest are from other people who pulled me in.

How do normal people get hobbies?

Some people immediately burn with passion about a random thing and are immediately 100% invested

I can relate with that and it really sucks. So while I can't give any advice because I too am still in the 'trying to figure shit out' phase, I offer the only comfort I can give right now: We are not alone in this.ā¤ļø

It takes a long time to bring down the fortress, but youll get it done brick by brick šŸ¤

not very related to this but one time I was going out of the dormitory and my high school dorm had us writing the date and hour with our signature whenever we left and when we were back, and while I was writing it I realised I didnt know which day it was (neither did I think to check my phone, would be rude mid conversation with the dorm teacher) so I asked him which day it was, he told me and I wrote the day, then I realised I didnt know the month (as number, of course I knew the month!). That room was so incredibly silent.

English is not my naive language. What does "how they see themselves as a person" mean? Probably not about mirrors or selfies…

Their persepctive on who they are, their own identity. Do they like themselves, what do they feel their place in the world is?

Hoo boy, that's a set of really hard questions, I'd struggle immensely with them, although I'm well-adjusted to my life.
