Don't get a bunny if you don't want your home to look like you have a bunny. Yes, bunny-proofing can help, but they're amazingly good at defeating anything designed to stop them.

Also don't get a bunny if you intend on keeping just one. They are social animals that shouldn't be kept alone.

I've always wanted to raise one alongside cats though, I've heard they'll pick up how to use a litter box fairly well if they grow up together, especially if you use wood pellets, and they end up socialized pretty much like a weird cat. I don't know how likely that actually is or if the examples you can find online are basically outliers, but it would be the perfect combo of pets I think. Also super adorable when neither the cats or bun really know why their siblings are so weird.

My ex had 2 cats and a bunny and they were best friends. Not to the point of snuggling but they loved each other and played all day. I wound up getting 2 of my own and volunteered at the rabbit shelter, here are some tips:

  • They WANT a place to go. They'll train YOU where they want a litter box. If you put the box in one corner and they pee in the other, move it there
  • It's a different litter box than the cat's and you'll need many more. My rabs had free reign of 6 rooms (no cage) and 3 litter boxes.
  • It's much more gross than a cat litter box and requires more frequent cleaning
  • Their personalities are as diverse as cats and some care a lot more about cleanliness than others
  • They WILL abandon their litter box to mark the perimeter if they feel threatened. Say, introducing a new pet
  • Some rabbits will NEVER get along. With other rabbits or cats. Their personalities are as diverse as a cat.

I loved them but bonestly, I don't recommend getting a rabbit unless you've thought hard about all of the downsides...most of which I didn't mention. I've described them before as "more trouble than owning a dog with fewer benefits than owning a cat"

And they are also absolutely not a good pet for 99.9% of kids.
