Targetting these is genuinely a viable wartime strategy as Russia projects it's influence heavy through propaganda and other digital initiatives in other nations.

I'm not sure if this is a "It's called X guys" comment or a "That pile of dogshit is still online?" comment. And my upvote/downvote depends on that

Wonder if it had a measurable effect on .ml traffic...

I'm waiting for someone to say hexbear is down or something. (My instance is defederated from them and grad, so I wouldn't know).

Lets see if we can bait some of the .ml heavyweights out. I'll start:

The PRC is a hypercapitalist colonial/imperialist superpower masquerading as communism.

There. Start the timer.

18
lemmy.ml

both .ml and hexbear have had zero downtime for october so far

3
lemmy.ml

the server is in france so it would probably be a major incident if big Z attacked that

0

i'm in the us and have actually met other .ml users in person 😂

the xenophobic paranoia about us will never stop being hilarious tho

2

So you're admitting you use 'bot' as a method of dehumanization instead of literally describing a process on a server.

e: and then later you think you can get away with incredulity at being called racist?

1
lemmy.ml

Are you timing your diarrhea cramps or something?

You're choosing to censor yourself from the opinions of leftists.

-2
sopuli.xyz

"the opinions of leftists"

I get plenty of those, as I am one and interact among the rational segment of leftism. What I don't waste my time on is fake-leftist shill accounts peddling disinformation on behalf of the imperial fascist financial oligarchy that is the Russian Federation.

So nice try trying to monopolize leftism, but it's not working. Go peddle your caricature elsewhere.

-1

Give me one single example from history when your strain of "rational leftism" has ever accomplished anything.

sopuli.xyz

Maybe if your sources are all 10+ years old, that might seem like a justifiable position

I was about to say "you've never heard 'superpower' used in a geopolitical context?" and then I noticed your username and suddenly the silent "/s" came through.

Carry on, good sir!

Yes everyone having a different political opinion is a bot. If you ask me, that is not a civil comment. You're maligning and dehumanizing anyone disagreeing with you.

0

You act like a botist, you're gonna be called a botist.

Human rights for bots now!

Yandex is just web crawlers like the ones Google and many other companies have. Perhaps that server housed their bot farm shit too but who knows. The drop in Yandex crawling is proven with data, but the rest of this is just speculation and assumptions based on perception. It’s anecdotal.

33

Yandex is basically Russian Google. They do everything Google does I'm pretty sure (except phones. They did try to make phones though), including but not limited to AI, web crawling, the cloud, delivery, smart home, and even payments

2
orcareply
orcas.enjoying.yachts

It’s stupid because it blinds people to the fact that Russians are working class just like we are, and just like Ukrainians are. Lumping them altogether with their shitty leadership and governments is not ideal.

8

You're fucking unhinged, I've never seen anyone else who deletes every single comment they make within hours of making it. Using slurs too, go to therapy.

There are plenty of reasons to dislike Russia aside from the nationalist propaganda, thank you.

I dislike Russia because they were the bad guys in Rocky IV, meaning I have a better moral standing than whatever nonsense you're posting on about. Typical of a foreigner to be culturally insensitive like that, but I forgive you. Not everyone grew up with access to VHS.

WanderWisely originally posted it and GFL thought it was good enough to repost. What’s the issue here?

61
sh.itjust.works

Personally the issue I have is that this is what crossposting is for. Posting it over and over just takes up more space on servers that are largely paid for by donations.

35
fonix232reply
fedia.io

Crossposting unfortunately doesn't always work (many communities restrict it for example), and many clients still don't support it properly

15
sh.itjust.works

I’m not sure why a community would do that, like are there any that restrict voting? It’s a fundamental part of the platform.

If we waited until everybody was ready for every feature we would never get any features. I’m really not sure that “third party apps aren’t finished yet” is an argument against using a feature of the platform.

-2

I've seen multiple communities that enforced the no crosspost rule.

And by "apps not supporting it well" I don't just mean visually but the fact that there's no cross-post option/button. If someone uses such a client, they're simply unable to use the feature even if they want to.

6

I mean to a certain extent I don't mind it if the result is reddit losing money.

Search the news for yandex strikes in russia. Bot traffic was 0.4% of previous levels from one article I read.

14

You don't actually believe that, if you thought any instance had a lot of unlabeled bots, you'd just report them.

Is there also a source for twitter traffic decrease?

16

You linked to a fedi discussion of a news article. Saving everyone time, the evidence presented is:

Take Richard Tice for example. Below are three posts on X from the Reform deputy leader to his almost 400,000 followers on Monday, 11 October. At the time of writing, none of the posts had hit triple figures for reposts or comments, with one not even reaching 10,000 views.

{...}

Before the Ukrainian strikes on the Russia data centres, Tice’s posts got considerably more engagement, consistently hitting triple figures for comments and reposts, whilst racking up hundreds of thousands of views.

None of us would have noticed because none of us use Xitter.

3

This is about Yandex's bots, these are web crawlers. This has nothing to do with bots on X.

10

October 11th, 5:08 AM (GMT+2) As a result of the UAV attack, the infrastructure of Yandex’s data center in Vladimir was damaged. The data center’s operation has been completely suspended. There are no casualties; the relevant services are already on site and dealing with the consequences.

there should be a weekly holiday where everyone agrees not to look at the local datacenters (wherever they are) for the entire day and if the datacenter is mysteriously gone the day after the holiday it's considered good luck.

18
lemmy.world

what makes you assume that? the graph is labelled bot traffic. what am I missing?

0

Bot is a very vague word, covering many different things.

Crawlers do not try to hide that they are bots, simply looking at the user agent is enough to tell they are a bot.

Social media bots try to hide that they are bots, both to the social media and to services like cloudflare. Any half-decent social media bot will exit through a domestic IP, not through an hosting provider IP, especially not in Yandex's AS. And their traffic will be categorized as human.

4

This graph is likely from a site proxy (e.g. Cloudflare, but I think the colours are wrong) showing information about incoming requests. Posting bots generally make much less traffic than scrapers (scrapers tend to blindly follow links, while posting bots just make the API requests they want).

11
BilSababreply
lemmy.world

i guess that's the plan going forward. also a good advert for self-hosting because a lot of data is going to get lost

4

It may be a good advert but it certainly isn't helping the cost of hardware. Just increasing demand as other data centers must scale up to accommodate the change in network traffic.

0

it's been a slow erosion of air defence over the years, finally now valuable targets in the major cities are routinely vulnerable.

1

I love the fact this happened and I also love the fact how Ukraine is using my yearly donations in its fight against the russian regime ❤️

5

The bot traffic in question is indexing crawlers. Yandex is a search engine (among other things), there is nothing suggesting they're hosting LLMs to run bot accounts

5

Well that's weird. The community which removes all memes about Palestine leaves up political posts about Russia.

Tells you a lot about .world

0

You got banned for antisemitism by your mods and Hexbear genuinely hates you.

2

.worlders just can't stop making stuff up. Congrats on catching a .ml ban though since besides rule 2 .world also doesn't enforce rule 1

Glad we have functional mods on .ml.

1
kingofrasreply
lemmy.world

You’re not a functional mod, and you’re using the genocide in Palestine to encourage nihilism and bothsideism. You’re just a closet Trump supporter who doesn’t even care to debate pro-democracy people, and just bans them and call them ‘Zionist’ as ban reason. Lol.

I’m sorry I thought you genuinely despised the IDF and were for the betterment of Palestian people, but I was wrong.

1
lemmy.ml

How does it feel to not be able to Blue MAGA in .ml because we have functional moderation?

0
kingofrasreply
lemmy.world

I doubt you want to have a discussion in good faith after calling someone who has been to more free palestine rallies than you a “Zionist”, based on 2 paragraphs of text and a complete lack of impulse control.

But if you do want to hear why I think people need to vote even though there aren’t that many good options, say the word and we’ll have a debate somewhere neither of us have mod powers.

2
lemmy.ml

You start your genocide defense with "this is why .ml isn't taken seriously by other instances" but tell me more about good faith.

1

Yes, that is why. But I don’t / I refuse to believe that. My point was to illustrate you enforce the stigma around your instance. I’ve seen good people on .ml - I thought you were one of them, that’s why I’m sadly reminded of my naivity. Good people who never wore their instance name as a badge of honour.

I’m saying: going with the classical “BuT BiDEn” defence is so classic Trump supporter. It’s so triggering to you you insta perma banned me.

Are you a Trump supporter? Why are you trying to get people to not vote in the most consequential (again) election cycle in American history?

Or is your opinion that, because AIPAC has such a tight grip on both parties, America should just be exterminated?

But most importantly: why are you so triggered by that? You run several committees with thousands of subscribers, this particular one doesn’t have a sidebar or rules, and you just permanently ban people as a knee jerk response whenever you don’t like, or in this case, don’t understand an argument?

Just write in your sidebar you don’t want anyone else to disagree with you. Even better: set your community to Only mods can post.

You can call me a Zionist if that makes you feel better, even though I am probably more anti Zionist than you are, but I am not defending the genocide in any form. I’ve participated and organised rallies, you absolutely do not know me. And since you knee jerk banned me, you clearly don’t want to know me either, so one wonders why get so triggered when people say pro democracy things around you.

I think you probably just say people are Zionists, because you are so anti Zionist you simply want to exterminate Israel and if possible all jews, but you don’t want to say that because that would be bad for business. Which is why you need to grow a spine. Stand up for what you believe in. Debate people openly if you’re so convinced of your beliefs, instead of banning them and cowardly hiding behind your mod power.

And possibly, very likely, you might have to spend a few more years travelling, maturing and understanding the world around you by interacting with other humans.
