US man shoots off-duty ICE agent who allegedly attacked him and daughter

ICE official, who was sleeping on man’s lawn and appeared ‘intoxicated’, faces felony charges, California police say

A 72-year-old man shot an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official in California early on Friday morning after the “intoxicated and agitated” official assaulted him and his daughter on their property, local authorities allege.

The Fresno police department said that the ICE official was receiving medical care after being shot in the midsection. The official, identified as David Gonzalez, is facing felony charges for assaulting the father-daughter duo, Fresno police said.

It was not immediately clear for how Gonzalez had been with ICE and what exactly he did for ICE. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, referred all questions about Gonzalez to Fresno police.

Faces felony charges, but the federal department he works for passed questions to the local authorities.

They dumped him on someone else to avoid accountability. Nice. Sounds like a Trump organization.

This is best case scenario. Local investigation and charges. Otherwise the feds will block access to to evidence and just say everything was done according to the books

The agents last name is Gonzalez. The feds will immediately disown him or throw him under the bus.

This just tells us there are still people in middle management who can’t stomach this shit. (Most people who couldn’t at higher levels have resigned already, and we can all see what’s coming for middle management)

Shortly thereafter, the daughter’s boyfriend, an off-duty police officer, arrived and placed handcuffs on Gonzalez.

I guess luckily they had a police officer in the family? I can't help but feel like things would have gone quite differently if they didn't have relations with the local police force.

Yeah the blue line is wobbly on this one so whoever does cop optics first wins.

"Gonzales" is a hell of a last name for a hired ethnic cleanser in California.

There’s likely a lot. In Texas here you see a ton of trucks with the punisher/blue line/trump wig stickers on their trucks with Hispanic men driving them. Completely disconnected from reality

I wounder how the police would have handled this if the homeowner name was Gonazels and the ICE agent name was William Baker.

25

Shout out to you for calling this “anti-immigrant campaign” what it is. I think the phrase Ethnic Cleansing needs to be permanently attached to ICE and the Trump Administration, and I wonder how many decades it’ll be before the media uses it.

It should be legal to shoot ice agents, on duty or off, particularly if they, as usual, are masked and not following police procedures. And if the man was afraid for his life, as he definitely should have been if an ice agent was involved, the precedent set by multiple high profile recent cases in other states is that it was legal. I hope that jury finds the same.

55

Honestly, since ICE agents don't provide any kind of id when asked, we shouldn't refer to them as ICE agents, because that's really unconfirmed. It would be more appropriate to say "masked man dressed as ICE agent", because we can't actually know that they're an official rather than a criminal in a costume. And obviously, the correct and rational response to being assaulted or harassed by someone in a mask is to treat them like a criminal, and defend yourself appropriately.

This isn't self-defense, it's just plain murder. While I don't agree with ICE wearing masks and acting lawless, calling for more violence is not the way. Don't become the very thing you hate.

They willfully chose to become monsters. Your call for "humanity" is shielding evil from consequences.

8

It's murder like in killing a Nazi soldier in France as a French during Nazi occupation in WW2. Sure, it's illegal under the occupation forces' law. But it's still the right thing to do.

6

Stop the thugs, not the people punching back if you want it to stop. It's cowardly to speak down, speak up and these poor folks will have nothing* to bitch about.

6

I really don't think calling for no violence in a progressively more fascist, corporate-owned country that gets a hard on from shooting deadly weapons is logical.

It's in their constitution, go wild guys. Better it used on the people harming society at large than anywhere else.

America can deepthroat the barrel of a nice thick gun and pull the trigger as the climax

4
lemmy.world

I appreciate your sentiment against violence more than the community at large. While I do hate needless divisiveness, as many others have already said in this instance the person in question made a conscious choice to enact the hateful, barbaric policies of the trump administration as the instrument of violence for personal profit.

We who cherish tolerance must be the most mindful of the tolerance paradox.

1

I'm not advocating for ICE's lawlessness nor tolerance for it. I'm just pointing out the stupidity of someone calling out to go murder with next to no context. What I mostly see for comments in this post are people regurgitating talking points and buzz words. Then there are the attacks on me misrepresenting my message or just plain acting like idiots saying nazi, nazi, nazi, ..... To think, these are the people who consider themselves the more educated side. Funny.

They're human. They represent the worst of humanity, but dehumanizing is their game, and it's best not to play it.

48
sh.itjust.works

Mmm nope, gonna have to disagree. Your statement is a demonstration of the paradox of tolerance in action.

Any ICE agent, at any time, can choose to no longer be an ICE agent. The people that ICEatzgruppen are targeting and repressing and brutalizing and deporting and killing cannot choose to not be targeted.

Fascists should be scared for their lives, always. The fact that they aren’t anymore, and haven’t been for at least a decade now, is a big part of how we got here.

I'm not saying they're good people. They're the worst of us, but they aren't doing anything humans aren't capable of doing. Don't trust them, but keep an eye on your own limits, too, as you don't want to follow their lead.

I saw someone else say they think of it as "pest control" and I agree with every fiber of my being.

I don't agree with your statements at all. It's not a slippery slope to want to protect your fellow citizens from a modern Nazi SS

ETA: I bet others back in the 1930s Germany were saying/thinking the exact same as you are right now. And I'd tell them to fuck all the way off because of it.

"They're human" is not the same as defending them. Kinda cringe to call someone a Nazi for refusing to dehumanize their enemy.

I absolutely love the comments here. On cucked Reddit this would have been locked and nearly all comments deleted. I got permabanned there a couple days ago for going off on Russia and their stupid plague situation. Of course, I had previous bans, one of which was for wishing these Chinese kids, that killed those beloved village dogs a while ago, the absolute worst mob justice imaginable.

Anyway, fuck ICE, keep firing at the bastards.

24

all those in PA remember one thing. If you vote for Frank Pastella and the rest of the republicans, you vote to let Pastella rape your kids. Vote no to Republikkkans like Frank Pastella to keep their dicks outside of your children's bodies. even cucks should be smart enough to keep nazi dicks out of their children's bodies.

5

That's why they've been targeting demographics with low gun ownership. They're well aware of that possibility.

8

At least they can't justify more violence with "they are shooting at us, we gotta shoot first to protect our little fragile egos!"

3

How could they even tell he was off duty? He wasn't behaving any differently to when he's at work.

Maybe less tacti-cool gear?

No I didn't. Can't be charged with a crime when there's no one left to report it.

Make Homeland Security start naming their "officers" after they're dead. Spoiler alert, they won't because the majority of them are J6ers, formerly dismissed cops, or convicted felons. No way Homeland will admit to hiring the absolute worst people for upholding immigration enforcement.

-1

They admit it all the time. They’re proud of it. It’s how fascists brag about the power they’ve amassed.

2

They could televise it, I heard that was the new thing.

1

If it was in the West Bank , he would got shot instantly, his whole family and neighbors would be killed and their homes destroyed

4
lemmy.world

Yeah. They've been low-key happening on the regular since ICE started going hard on deportations, side items in the media that are reported but without any fanfare, usually involving drinking + bad acts that together result in an arrest.

It's almost like some of these wannabe sociopaths have just enough of a stub conscience left to fuck them up when they're away from the team and forced to be alone with themselves, but not enough of one to just walk away.

13
Snowclonereply
lemmy.world

it's more because they're all typically people who couldn't make it in the police or military, either because of criminal records, addiction, behavior problems, or worse, like all official street thugs of a fascist government, they are the worst people, and when this finally falls apart and people start doing through the details they'll be identified.

7
lemmy.world

Maybe. All that may be true, but it has nothing to do with how you handle who and what you are after the rest of your team has left for the day and you're faced with the silent emptiness that contains only you and the knowledge of what you've been up to in it.

A distant threat of criminal prosecution, that may or may not ever even happen, has nothing against the recent memory of the woman looking up into your eyes with a mix of horror and revulsion, seeing you as the monster you are as she fights you trying to rip her kid away from her, or the remembered cries of the family members screaming at you as you take their father, or the shouts of "Shame!" from the crowd as they watch you violently subdue some guy whose only crime is being brown.

Some people enjoy it, even feed on that shit. Some people are deeply horrified in some remaining corner of inner sanity and try to drink it away so they can keep doing it. Both are fucked, but deep down where it counts when a human being is alone with himself, they are not the same.

4

I blame it more on the pressure to deliver unreasonable numbers of arrests/deportations causing a high amount of "work stress" combined with the fact that they're garbage to begin with.

I seriously doubt any of them have a conscience or feel like they're doing anything wrong if they willingly took that job.
