It's me. I spent my childhood playing with my brothers outside. My wife is constantly finding things like this out.

So he doesn't know much about Disney nor musical theater, sounds like a keeper lol

why? you could get to explore your hobby from the beginning with someone new.

Oh......... right.

I was just thinking of someone who had been raised without Disney or musical theatre and just how empty their life would be and how miserable a human being they'd be.

It didn't occur to me that you could introduce them to it and brighten their life to an infinitely better degree. Oooops :)

So you judge someone else’s entire life on their not having been exposed to random shit you enjoy?

That is some SERIOUS main character syndrome ya got there. It’d be like me telling someone;

“Wait! You don’t know music theory? Your life must be torture! How could you not know the order of tones and semitones in a major scale?! OMG! How depressing!”

25

Pfffawh. They probably don't even know about the intricacies about electronic train engines built between April 1973 and November 1981. What an empty life that must be

shrug People need more musical theatre in their life.

Search your feelings. You know it is true.

What you exposure to 1980s British comedy? Because if you don't have an encyclopaedic knowledge of it I could say the same thing about you.

I know a fair amount - from Blackadder to Fawlty Towers, from The New Statesman to Yes Minister. I am not unaware of it :)

1

Noting it makes people arrogant and judgmental like you. No.

Nah, people need more empathy and love in their life.

And less pretending that some things are universal.

You know there is more to life than cartoons with music right?

You know Disney's a pretty awful company right?

3

Okay - here's the thing about "awful companies"

If I listened to everyone who said "OH NO! YOU HAVE TO BOYCOTT THIS COMPANY BECAUSE.........." then I would literally not be able to buy food, petrol, drinks, electricity, gas or anything.

At a certain point - I can't remember when - I decided that I coculd either be a completely ethical and moral person or just say "screw it - the world is a crappy place and honestly there's very little I can do about it"

I don't kill. I don't molest people. I don't steal. I don't blow things up. For the most part I think I am a relatively good person.

If I give my patronage to companies that other people think are "a bit awful" then that's their problem, not mine.

Lol to each their own! There are admittedly things I would be horrified to learn my partner liked or didn't like. And jokes aside, musical theater probably isn't one of them (modern country, on the other hand, is definitely a dealbreaker)

Unrelated but every time I see your name, I think you're Gabi Belle. And in the unlikely chance that you are, congrats on the album!

I think you’re Gabi Belle

See most people think I am the guy from Deep Space Nine who changed history and made the world a better place for everyone.

To each their own I guess :)

Ha, the irony is I've consumed exponential more Star Trek media than Gabi Belle. Never saw that episode in particular, though!

I for one have fond childhood memories watching the phantom mermaid of notre dame

13

Well that wasn't a phrase I thought I'd read when I woke up this morning.

1

Nah, the phantom mermaid was one of them star wars movies

3

Child-like innocence could be endearing I suppose? Love will find a way.

But there was an animated Phantom of the Opera. And I am also sure Warner Brothers have spoofed it more than once in their cartoons.

10

Gremlins 2 spoofed it as well.

I would imagine it's been spoofed A LOT.

Rapid fire, one thing he learned about her:

She’s a pretentious douche.

4
lemmy.world

how is she a pretentious douche? she's just pointing out he either missed or misunderstood common childhood stories that literally everyone knows.

5

Only Disney people and theater kids know these stories.

Stop being so pretentious.

1
lemmy.world

lol what. those stories are all part of european folklore, children and people have known them for about 200 years, longer if you count their non-standardized forms before Grimm and Anderson.

sounds like you're very sensitive and you think people pointing out facts about other people is looking down on them... might want to work on your low self esteem or just go watch the little mermaid, or read the book.

and stop being so weird and thinking common folk stories are 'only for disney people'.

I doubt someone growing up in the 2000s will have watched little mermaid. A person at work said that one of the oldest films they can recall watching is Shrek. Little mermaid was older when Shrek came out then Shrek is now so I can totally see people having not ever seen it.

2

i have four nephews and they all know what little mermaid and all the other disney/grimm/anderson folklore is.

sounds like you did not have a childhood rich in classic stories? maybe you are not american/european?

if you said 'An indian immigrant child probably doesn't know what little mermaid is' yeah, probably.

these are not just movies dude, they are folklore embedded in western culture. like most Americans have never read the Constitution, but they know that it exists.

1

Call kettles "black" much Mr. Pot?

No need to get defensive just because you haven't seen a movie that is a cultural touchstone for a good chunk of the population.

I don't think I've ever watched phantom of the opera either, although I know it's not animated.

1

I think there is an animated version actually - there's like five different versions.

One with Teri Polo and Charles Dance, the film of the musical, a silent version........ I think there's a cartoon version but I can't remember exactly? (Damn it - now I might have to look it up!!)

The Charles Dance one is quite long. And invovles rats at once point.

You reached the end
