Inktober, cactus
Continuing the mesolithic theme but because there are no native cactus species in Europe or the Middle East so I had to go to the Americas. While Europeans were dealing with cave bears the Clovis people were dealing with giant land sloths. Yes, they really existed. They could be between 9 and 18 feet tall. Though the taller ones were from South America.
But this is really about the cactus. Prickly pear offers defensive positions, food, water, fishing hooks and toothpicks. It's a dramatically under valued plant.

I’m still mad about giant sloths not existing anymore. 😡
I want a giant land sloth in my backyard.
Also, missed the prickly pear fruit is delicious and this great reddish purple color.
I too would love if giant sloths were still around. Would make hiking river beds a lot more interesting.
I always forage a ripe prickly pear fruit if I find one.
