New to RC. Front clicking/ratcheting sound (Carson Tenzu 1:16 / HBX 16889 base)

video

This is my first RC car in a very long time and I am really enjoying it a lot, it's a Carson Tenzu 1:16 (which according to Gemini shares the HBX 16889 / BlackZon Slyder chassis) few days ago.

It has take few front-end impacts and after a small impact it started making a new sound

Right now, I've noticed two clear symptoms:

  • One of the front wheels has noticeably much more play / wobble / slop than the other.
  • There is a distinct clicking / ratcheting sound coming from the front end, as shown in the video.

Aside from that sound, the car drives, but I immediately stopped using it because I don't want to make the situation any worse or chew up any parts.

Based on the video and the symptoms:

  • What do you think is going on ?
  • Is it completely unsafe to run like this, or could it just be a loose link / popped part?

What's strange is that the car doesn't make the noise when going in reverse.

I'm not familiar with that particular rig, but it sounds like a differential gear being damaged. Could be a loose linkage like you said.

I think it was wise to stop running it, though I suspect that you'll end up replacing a part either way. It should run okay until a gear strips entirely, but why do that?

Is there any video or forum I can find info on how to disassembly it or what to do? Thanks

Sounds like a diff to me also, how does it feel if you hold one wheel and rotate the other?
