It happened again, I was once again forced to give an ID scan to a company. Fuck LG.
So I been on a business trip to Korea for a hot minute and got LG as an ISP. When getting them, it was pretty straightforward.
But guess what? To cancel them, they requested a scan of my ID Card.
I argued with them back and forth for like an hour and it ended with them saying they'd be okay taking a scan of my license to conceal carry a firearm as a scanned ID.
Not the worst, but fuck man. The writing is on the wall and shit is just getting worse every day. Privacy is an afterthought man, it sucks.
Least the soju was good.

“Hi bank, this business is refusing to stop payments after I requested multiple times. Please dispute this charge and refuse any further from them…”
damn, sorry you had to experience that.
tho korean citizens need to provide ID and facial scan to open a new phone line, so you provided less info than me. lol
Yeah, Korea doesn't respect privacy at all. I did manage to change some minds while there tho. Hope I planted the seeds of doubt they need to care more about this.
What was the problem? Sorry, I'm not from your neck of the woods and don't know what the difference is between your "ID" and your weapon licence - if they both contain personally-identifying information, what's the issue between using one or the other? If the licence doesn't identify you they why would they accept it as ID? Was it that you don't possess an "ID card"?
I come from somewhere with neither ID cards nor concealed-carry laws.
Gee, I dunno how about massive fucking data breaches and identity theft happening every day? Maybe that is my problem with it!?
My brother in christ, how are you not seeing this even if you are, as you claim, from some area with neither!? I could get my identity stolen WHEN, not if, LG has a huge data breach because they're a shitty company.
Yes, the point is: what's the difference between the ID they asked for and the one you gave them? Don't they contain the same critical information, so from a privacy/impersonation point of view they're the same?
It's all bad, but at least my CCL doesn't have my DL number. That is my point. I'm gonna still get my identity stolen.
We're going into an age of Steal An Identity.
lol ok, lots of people lining up to be you buddy
Haven't had several cerdit cards opened in your name yet I guess?
No I live in a proper country
That's not a good thing.
I thought I was being clear? I don't know whether you have an ID card, or whether it's mandatory to have one where you are. I don't know what different information seeing it would give a third party. I don't know whether your gun licences are written on the back of a pack of cigarettes in crayon. That's what I'm trying to find out - what's the difference between these forms of ID that you're okay with people seeing one but not the other?
And where does LG come into it? I thought they were a hardware manufacturer rather than some identity verification service.
Okay, sorry dude. I'm just really fucking stressed and seeing red and got mad at you unfairly. In the USA, IDs are not technically mandatory, but your life will be hindered greatly without them.
A DL has a specific number on it that, if obtained, can allow people to open up lines of credit in your name. They take the money and the debt goes to me. I had my identity stolen once before when I was like 23 and it fucked me up.
My license for a concealed carry doesn't have that, that said you can still use it for some things and now LG has it.
Granted, as someone else said, I maybe could have just told them to fuck off and tell me bank to cut them off, but they threatened legal action on me. Would they have? It is Korea and that has happened where companies sue individuals, so maybe?
As for LG, they were my internet service provider and mobile provider when in Korea. That was likely a bad move on my part, but oh well. What can I do now that I already fucked up?
No worries!
That all makes a lot of sense thanks.
It sounds like Korea has a method to help prevent social engineering breaches. Requiring ID to close an account stops a random person impersonating you and closing your account maliciously.
Also if you are from the USA, get ready for ID required everywhere, as it seems the current admin is moving full on to needing papers on you at all times
I think you're onto nothing.
It's already happened with ICE detaining US citizens for lack of ID. You have Flock monitoring your every move. You also a push for Windows PCs to require ID to login and use. The USA is looking more like China except without Healthcare
...could you not just be like "okay, I will stop paying you money now, good bye"
I did say how about I just cut up the card I give them and they said they might take legal action. Given this is fucking Korea, that does happen. Corporations sue individuals fairly commonly.
It sucks ass, man. It really does.
Eh, probably not a great idea on a business trip, in which case I'd be using a corporate card and letting corporate deal with it, but if that was a personal trip: "good luck, I'm off to no longer your jurisdiction!"
The corporate card we used only covered travel and board. It didn't cover things like internet and mobile.
I guess I don't understand the problem. You went to another country and are annoyed that they do things their own way.
What argument did they use for requiring your ID to cancel? Shame GDPR is not applicable to you (I assume you're American with the CCL).
For reference (for others reading this), with GDPR you can invoke the following:
Recital 57, Art. 17, and Art. 5.1(c).
GDPR applies if you are a citizen and/or resident of the EU/EEA (+ Switzerland) (Art. 3).
I am American, though I do live in a state with equivalent protections.
I'm guessing California? I'm not super familiar with their data protection laws, but did you try and use your state's protections in your situation?
