My current coffee setup

My current coffee setup. Here’s what’s shown, from left to right:

“It’s always tea time” Alice in Wonderland themed kettle decoration/sign. My wife bought it for a party or something I think years ago, now it’s hanging out with the coffee gear as we don’t drink much tea.

Two-tiered shelf for smaller coffee equipment:
Top shelf:

  • White bar towels.
  • Coffee Water. Half the price of Third Wave Water so I thought I’d give it a try. It does the job.
  • Hario Switch. Just a glass V60 with a stopper on the bottom but way more fun and better results than a standard V60.
  • Timemore Black Mirror Mini. Just barely poking out is my scale.
  • Not visible: coffee dosing tray.

Bottom shelf:

  • Bialetti Moka Express 3-cup moka pot. This is what got me into this hobby. It doesn’t get used much anymore but it holds a special place in my heart.
  • Clear plastic bag holding V60 papers. Barely visible, but that’s what’s in it.
  • Clear resealable plastic bag holding Robot filters. Same deal, barely visible, but that’s what it’s holding.
  • Timemore Chestnut S3. My first grinder and a great little hand grinder. I still use it for pour overs. Not great for espresso though.
  • White cleaning brush. This is for my electric flat burr grinder, to clean the exit chute.
Note visible: AeroPress filters for the moka pot, stopper for preheating the Robot, 54mm dosing funnel for the moka pot, tamper for the Robot.

Gaggia Classic Pro. This was my first espresso machine and I still love it. It doesn’t get used as much anymore but I still use it for darker roasts, milk drinks, americanos Canadianos, and when we have people over. On top of the GCP is:

  • WDT tool
  • magnetic 58mm dosing funnel
  • Milk pitcher
  • Self-leveling 58mm tamper

Fellow Stagg EKG Pro. The best kettle I’ve ever used. It looks great, lots of features, and pours really nicely. It gives me tons of control (both pouring control, and also temperature control, being accurate to 0.5°C).

DF54 V4. This is the newest addition, and I’m totally in love with it. It’s a great electric flat burr grinder. The shop I got it from offers two different burrs, either the stock burrs or their own custom red titanium burrs that are basically imitation SSPs. The nicer burrs are only $30 more than the stock ones so I went with that. I don’t have the stock burrs to compare it to, but I’m very happy with my purchase. This thing is weighty (11lbs) and works great. If you saw my post when I first got it, I mentioned it grinds slow, but that’s actually improved with time. It’s now giving me 18g espresso in around 10-15 seconds. There’s also zero retention thanks to the improvements in V4 so I’m super happy about that.

Cafelat Robot. This manual espresso maker is incredible. I can easily get the best espresso of my life every single morning even when I’m half asleep. It does such a consistently good job, even if you don’t nail your grind size. If I lost all my coffee equipment and had to start from scratch, this would be the first thing I’d buy again. It’s the best coffee purchase I’ve ever made, easily.

There’s other coffee stuff not pictured, such as a 6-cup moka pot, a french press, and obviously bags of coffee and mugs and stuff, but this is the equipment I use on a somewhat regular basis.

If I had to get rid of most of it and only keep the minimum, I’d easily choose to just keep the Fellow Stagg, DF54, and Robot. The rest gets used too but those three are my core coffee drinking equipment. I’d like to keep the Switch too, mostly for my coffee thermos, but I could go without if needed. I could always do Canadianos for my commute to work I suppose.

I should totally give him a name.

Maybe I’ll get this community here to help me find a name for him in my next post. I want to get some hats for him to wear too.

I was thinking an actual name.

I like Doug. Named after Douglas Rain, Canadian actor who voiced HAL9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey which is my all-time favourite movie. But I’d definitely be open to other suggestions.

Ah thanks. I’ve been meaning to watch that, it’s been on my list for years now but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Maybe when I watch it, if I really like it, I’ll consider that name. Thanks!

Tobor? Or perhaps Red? As I understand it Australians call people with red hair "Bluey".

Thank you! My wife picked it out for me recently after I complained I didn’t have a good spot to put my smaller coffee stuff. I’m quite happy with it.

Too many coffee making choices!

How is the DF54 for pour over and/or Switch?

If I buy one, it would be to replace the Fellow Opus v1 that I use at the office with a Clever Dripper.

It’s been great. Really nice separation of flavour. For being predominantly an espresso grinder on the more affordable end, it does a really good job with coarser grinds too.

The two biggest changes going from the Opus to the DF54 that I could see would be (1) conical to flat burr, and (2) ease of dialling in.

(1) Flat burrs produce less fines, so you’ll have better flavour clarity at the expense of less body and usually a tighter window to dial in. It does definitely take a bit more effort to get a good grind size than on my conical hand grinder, but when you get it, the taste is definitely better.

(2) While finding the sweet spot is going to be harder, the act of dialling in is easier. It’s stepless so you get infinite adjustability, and you don’t have to deal with that stupid inner blue dial on the Opus, which seems really annoying.

In general, it’s a great grinder, I think you’d notice a not insignificant improvement to taste, and I think the user experience would be better. The stepless dial really is nice to have, plus the all-metal body feels great to use.

2

Since I am using it with a Clever Dripper, the inner ring never gets moved. I make at least two clicks of adjustment on the outer so that the change is noticable.

Thanks for the reply. Happy Friday

Im so close to pulling the trigger on a manual espresso maker that I'm not sure if I need. And this post isnt discouraging it at all.

Which manual maker are you leaning towards? I can (and do) enthusiastically recommend the Robot, but they’re quite challenging to find, both new and used. I’ve heard great things about Flair’s entire lineup, and I’ve also heard really good things about La Pavoni too but they’re definitely not cheap.

1

Thanks for the input. The Cafelat and Flair Plus were high on the list, but I'd be open to anything that is robust and consistent for someone new to manual presses. Willing to pay more for something that lasts longer too.

2

Well if you’re willing to deal with the initial headache of actually buying a Robot, it’s a great manual maker. They are in very limited quantity though, and demand is substantially higher than supply, so you’ve gotta do your research. I’d still recommend it though, it was absolutely worth the extra effort to obtain one for me, personally.

3

I was going to ask you about the Robot. Glad you like it. I've got a Flair GO!, it's so simple, and works great, in the kitchen or car camping.

Glad to see you like the DF54 that's been on my wish list for over a year but my current grinder is working okay. Otherwise there's a lot of overlap for my setup, I have a Gaggia, similar WDT tool and tamp and really enjoying what I get out of all of it.

It’s a great grinder, I’d highly recommend it. A massive step up from using a hand grinder that’s not actually rated for espresso.

What grinder are you currently using?

2

I have the cheapest burr grinder from krupps that has a hopper. Works fine but certainly need to upgrade to get a better grind and measure the input better.

DF54 V4

I want this grinder, I've just been putting off dropping the cash on it.

2

It’s a great purchase, I’m sure you’ll be happy with it if you pull the trigger.

Every complaint I read about the DF54 got fixed by V4. I’m not really sure what they can do to improve it further at this point without making a major change.
