Developed by Psyraven and released under the GNU General Public License, it serves as a user-friendly fork of the original DOSBox, originally evolving from a core used in RetroArch."

• Why

Due to significant performance improvements over X11, a more aggressive CPU/GPU usage compared to its "vanilla" version. Note: You'll have to lower CPU cycles and overall performance if you are on a beefy PC -- this has been made with the "potato PC" (read: raspberry pizero) in mind. Which means, it'll crank both CPU and GPU usage all the way (possible) to the top.

The required dependencies are: "sudo apt install
build-essential
g++
make
libsdl2-dev
libgl1-mesa-dev
libasound2-dev
libpulse-dev
libwayland-dev
libxkbcommon-dev
libegl1-mesa-dev
libgles2-mesa-dev" if you are on debian.

One-time config after extract:

cp ZillaLib/Linux/ZillaAppLocalConfig.mk.example
ZillaLib/Linux/ZillaAppLocalConfig.mk

Then edit "ZillaAppLocalConfig.mk" accordingly (should be self-explanatory):

EXTERNAL_SDL2_INCLUDE = /usr/include/SDL2

EXTERNAL_SDL2_SO = /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libSDL2.so

(use aarch64-linux-gnu on ARM64)

How to compile:

Extract the tarball. Then,

cd dosbox-pure-unleashed

make linux-release -j$(nproc)

After the compilation is complete,

export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland ./Release-linux/DOSBoxPure_*

• How to install

Simply copy the built binary to /usr/local/bin/. or to any directory you'd like.

• Notes

I've tested this on a orange pi 5 max and everything works as intended. The results may differ on your PC, so keep that in mind.
