At some point, you have to hit the ground. Your experience as a pilot determines how well that goes.

Hahaha!! Not if the booster rocket I've secretly built into the plane takes me into space first, Mr. Bond!

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. No mention is made of the passengers.

addendum. any landing most of you can walk away from. i left part of me on an A321 a few years back and i wonder where that old asshole's been every now and then.

IIRC that’s a fairly famous runway that’s extremely close to the ocean shore, and people flock to it to have a jet come in danger close over their heads.

If I'm thinking of the same one, it's rather short, too. For a larger plane, every last bit of tarmac is essential to having enough runway to come to a stop.

Bugs is a dapper lad no matter the outfit, but let’s be honest: who didn’t have their giblets tingle when he played the girl bunny?

La Paz, Bolivia is at about 13,000 feet. That's pretty high up.

It's always interesting to see the ADS-B data from flights landing at airports like this. ADS-B only transmits the uncalibrated barometric altitude, so you see aircraft drop from 13kft to 0 once it hits the ground.

people have a very hard time judging height from a distance... that could still be 100-200 ft from the ground.

your 6ft frame won't be anywhere near it.

The shadows appear to be midday allowing measurements from the plane's shadow to its wheels. I don't know plane size so wheels could be 4 to 5 feet tall. I can tell it is not the larger or smaller ones. Estimating from there I get 30-40 feet above ground. I would allow some perspective to account for some difference here, so I'd say it could be up to 80 feet. I highly doubt it is even 100.

While I don't disagree in general that the landing gear was above everyone on the ground, it was still an extremely low landing and came really close to a disaster. Here's a still from a higher-quality video

FTR the "ILS RDH" (Instrument Landing System Reference Datum Height, i.e. how high the plane will be on its glide path at runway threshold) is stipulated to be between 15 m and 18 m. It is set to that height specifically to balance between a safe vertical separation to ILS antennae or other obstacles before the threshold and maximizing the landing distance. The plane was definitely below 15 m even before runway threshold, so it was a low landing for sure. I couldn't find a report published about this incident, so I don't know what the actual "threshold crossing height" was here.

I'm confused, so the pilot should be high? | Spyke
