Russia simply hoped to be able to overwhelm Ukraine, and now they are afraid that any pause will give Ukraine time to collect themselves for even better defense. So they need to keep pushing.
This strategy by the Russians is what makes it possible for Ukraine to beat Russia 4:1 on the battle field, which is logistically required just to break even with a Russian military that is 4 times bigger than Ukraine's.

If Putin is running out that is great, but many speculate that Russia will mobilize around 500 thousand troops after the Russian election. But with poor training and equipment, it will probably not be as helpful as Putin hopes, it's "just" another desperate move, in a war where Russia is running out of options.

Russia can still make life hell in Ukraine, but in the long run, all they achieve is to make it hell in Russia too.
Russia has now lost more than a decade of economic progress. Don't be fooled by the economic numbers they are releasing, the combined value of their civil economy is down more than 50% compared to the beginning of the war. The only thing keeping up the official numbers is military spending, and regulation that prevent declaring businesses in key industries bankrupt.

The Russian economy is like a giant Enron. It's basically already collapsed, but they are using so many tricks to get around it and to hide it, that they somehow manage to carry on in a somewhat normal fashion.
