I only knew him from the 80s cartoon "Defenders of the Earth", I suppose I never really realised he was separately a character elsewhere (or that he already had a 50 year history).
came to mention defenders of the earth. it was a funny collection to put together. I always felt the phantom was neat with the inheritance and mythic persona thing and all before anyone even knew who the dread pirate roberts was.
I was surprised to learn that Mandrake is still going strong in some media around the world.
As far as relevancy in the States, I'm not sure the strip was really in peoples hearts and minds by ~1970, but it did last until 2013 I see. Pretty impressive, really.
