Is relocating to Luleå as a Dutch couple feasible? (Java Dev & Speech Therapist)
Hi everyone,
My partner and I (couple, early 40s) are considering emigrating from the Netherlands to Northern Sweden, specifically the Luleå/Kalix area. We want to get a reality check from locals and expats on whether our plan is actually feasible, particularly regarding employment.
Our Profile:
- Me (43, M): Senior Full-Stack Developer (Java/Kotlin/TypeScript), Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. ~20+ years of experience. Looking for remote work for a Dutch/EU company or local opportunities in Luleå.
- Partner (40, F): Speech therapist (Logopedist), Master's degree in Speech Therapy and Master's in Linguistics (Language Sciences). Needs to find work in Sweden; open to learning Swedish but currently speaks Dutch/English/German.
- Financials: We plan to buy a house outright with cash. No mortgage needed.
- Assets: Two cats to relocate.
The Main Question: We are realistic about the challenges (climate, darkness, integration), but we need honest feedback on the job market:
- IT Sector: How viable is it for a senior Java/Kotlin backend dev to find work in Luleå specifically? Is the local market big enough, or is remote work for a company outside Norrbotten the only realistic option?
- Speech Therapy: What are the actual hurdles for a foreign-trained speech therapist? Is demand high enough to justify the move, and how strict is the licensing process for EU-trained professionals? Her dual master's degrees (Speech Therapy + Linguistics) may help with recognition.
- Integration: How hard is it to integrate socially and professionally if we don't speak fluent Swedish yet?
We have the financial buffer to buy a home immediately, which removes housing stress, but we need to know if we can sustain an income there without relying solely on remote contracts.
Any brutal honesty or specific advice on the job hunt in Norrbotten would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just a few things to consider: Luleå is really far up north. You can divide Sweden in roughly the same distances: Helsingborg (Skania/southern part of Sweden)->Linköping Linköping->Uppsala (Slightly north of Stockholm) Uppsala->Sundsvall (Norrland) Sundsvall->Umeå (more norrland) Umeå->Luleå (even more norrland)
I'm guestimating a bit but basically 90% of Swedens population live south of Sundsvall.
That said Norrland is beautiful with all its nature and seasons and I hope you will thrive

I live in the area. There's pretty constant demand for java developers with Tullverket, Försäkringskassan, and SAAB often hiring. Beyond that there are a lot of consulting firms often looking for people. I managed to get a job straight out of uni.
From what I've gathered there's currently an overpressure in software engineers towards the south with a lot of competition. Up here there appears to instead be an underpressure with a lot of openings popping up. The things you'd run into is that being able to speak fluent Swedish is often times ranked highly or a requirement, as is having a drivers license and for some positions being able to get a security clearance.

I don't know about the far North specifically, but in case you don't get any better answers:
You can look at available job positions at: https://arbetsformedlingen.se/platsbanken/annonser?q=lule%C3%A5 It's of course possible to find a job not advertised there, but it can be a good start to check it regularly and maybe even apply for jobs before you commit to moving.
Integrating professionally: pretty much everybody speaks fluent English here, but in my experience it depends a lot on the work culture at the company. My last two jobs (also in IT) had a lot of English speaking employees and it felt very natural to speak English both at meetings and during breaks if there were non-Swedes present. At other jobs I had before that, where there were only a few English-only speakers, the Swedes didn't complain about needing to have some meetings in English but some could be a bit passive aggressive "joking" about it. And if one of the foreigners joined a group of Swedes already on their lunch/coffee break then nobody would switch to English voluntarily. In conclusion, I don't think you'll have any problems doing your job, but you might feel a bit frozen out. I have no idea if it's possible to work as a speech therapist in a different language than Swedish here.
Integrating socially: making friends as an adult is difficult in Sweden regardless of which language you speak. Introvertedness and social incompetense aside, Swedes our age often have kids and then they tend to mostly socialize with others who have kids the same age. Not saying it's impossible, but it might take a lot of active effort to build some kind of social acquaintance.

This would be highly not viable, other places sure. But you would not have a good time in Luleå. And the job market would be abyssmal in comparison.
I would recommend southern Sweden for you.
