To their credit, I believe the Chinese did at one point make powder charged darts shot out of bamboo or something, but they never went farther.
The Mongols were some of the first to use guns. Not a lot but they had a few auxillary units of them under Kubli Khan. Idk cannon and rockets were used earlier I think though by others.
The reason the west beat them to guns seems that China was always one country, they had a lot of unrest always, but they could put it down easy enough.
Meanwhile europe and the near east were made up of myriad nations constantly at war for thousands of years. So they had to one up each other in a constant arms race.
As money is the sinews of war, making money was also an arms race, hence the corporations and colonial trade and the like.
