One time I went on a date with a girl I met online, and she didn’t look at me. She had a big smile the whole time, and would briefly raise her head just to lower it immediately. Shortly into our long dinner I realized she was blind.
I thought it was odd she hadn’t mentioned it, but rolled with it and we had a nice dinner. Two hours later she left the restaurant and drove off.
I sat there for a while doing a post-mortem on our dinner thinking about how it went. Then it hit me: She drove here?
Girl was so shy that I actually thought she was blind.

Nah, I can't find in the article how far he drove from where he was to the M6.
I also can't find if the car was automatic or manual.
It'll probably blow your mind that it also doesn't state why the attendant didn't do anything about him stinking of booze.

It says he became blind later in life so this one wouldn't have much effect - if he already knew how to drive a manual that's something one could easily do even if completely blind.
I'm not on about the location of the stick, like you say it's pretty much muscle memory.
What I was trying to convey was how would he be able to negotiate gear changes for things like slowing down for junctions, roundabouts, traffic lights, motorway exits and that?
Same rules apply in an auto as well I guess...

You don't need sight to drive a manual. You can feel and hear it. Even just feel it if the music is up. Hit the accelerator and it doesn't go? Downshift. Let off gas and it decelerates too hard? Upshift.
If, as the article says, he was planning to drive to Scotland, he might just have decided he'd need fuel for the long journey and filled up without knowing whether the car was nearly full or nearly empty already.
Blind doesn't mean you can't see at all, its a classification. If you're eyesight is bad passed a threshold, 1/10th normal iirc, you are blind.
Fair enough, you would need some degree of sight to manage this. I can see it being possible with very minimal vision though assuming one is drunk enough to have a lot of self confidence and not care about potentially running into things.

I wouldn't say crisis. He did pullover, and stopped to get gas. A bender for sure. Crisis is SWAT and Highway Patrol helicopters employed.
I don't think the crisis they're referring to is about the situation he caused. I think they were referring to his mental condition, hence 'individual in crisis'. He felt trapped and was trying to escape from his home (seemingly in any way possible) and I'm sure the drinks only helped with making a poor choice in what to do then and there.
Imagine putting up a multi-hour chase, cops doing their best to stop you, and when they finally do they find out you're blind.
Would have to let you go from the embarrassment alone.
