My friend's dad, the assistant chief of the local volunteer fire department, helped out recovering the wreckage of the shuttle. He told us a story when he got back of interviewing the owner of a farm where a large amount of debris was recovered. The farmer told him the accident and subsequent rain of shrapnel "sounded like an onion falling out of an apple tree." I've never understood how much sense that made.
