The grim reaper doesn't kill people, it leads them to the afterlife.
Releases them from suffering and the struggle to survive.

The part the Human thinks would cause PTSD isn't an issue for the patient since the patient isn't Human. Terry Pratchett covered the issue better in his novel Mort.
