Major outages of almost all services

Looks like everything except VPN is listed as a major outage, and VPN is down for some people, too.

Update:

Identified - We have identified a critical cooling failure in our Frankfurt datacenter. We are currently in the process of shifting traffic to our backups sites. Aug 27, 2026 - 00:38 CEST

Update 2:

Monitoring - A fix has now been implemented, and we're monitoring results. This means most services have been recovered for most users now, but our efforts to recover the remaining instances continue. Aug 27, 2026 - 01:57 CEST

So they're a Swiss company but they're that dependent on a datacenter in Germany?

They announced about a year ago that they would be moving a lot of their infrastructure to a "Eurostack" due to proposed Swiss spying legislation. I haven't really heard much about it since. It was a footnote in a fucking AI blog post.

Because of legal uncertainty around Swiss government proposals(new window) to introduce mass surveillance — proposals that have been outlawed in the EU — Proton is moving most of its physical infrastructure out of Switzerland. Lumo will be the first product to move.
