I might be too old for this, but I found the movie very mediocre. The concept of the backrooms as I understand it is a very interesting one, but I don't think the film succeeded in making an interesting movie.
Here's how my Gen X ass woulda done it. Same setup, random store with the backrooms, but no ghostly wall. That was dumb. Just have a door that there's no key to, and they find a way to get it open (pick it?), and it leads to the Backrooms. Then, there's nothing back there, but they seem to go on forever. There are waypoints like features you recognise, but no real danger. Some noise, unsettling, makes you feel like there's something in there. There's not. You never see a monster. No one gets hurt there. You just hear one, like it's always around the next bend, but it's not.
After a while of searching, they try to go back, but it's not the same way back. We notice but they don't. They come to a world that isn't quite the one they left — much like that old show Sliders, but less intense changes. They realise what happened and go back through, never quite finding their world but accepting one that is close enough.
