No. People need to learn to refuse to have their ID scanned at bars and restaurants and every other place that has no business scanning their ID.
There should be a public consensus that having your ID scanned on demand for no reason is unacceptable. It would've been obvious to the people of thirty years ago. There ought to be public service announcements telling people why it's wrong, if for some reason the practice can't simply be prohibited completely.
What are ways to tell in advance if someone is going to scan your id vs just looking at it? They don't normally disclose that they are going to do that right?
Generally it depends on the person working. If you can't do math you scan it and if you can do math you just look at it. Either way outside of corporate joints none of that data gets harvested even if scanned.
Shit most liquor stores POS systems include a card reader on the keyboard, doesn't store anything just looks at birthday and compares it to today and gives you a yay or nay on the screen.
It's not hard to fake the data to, its just a mag stripe or barcode, it's not even checking against a database.
yeah in Toronto you'll get people handing out free samples of alcohol downtown. most of the time they don't ask for ID but sometimes they do and there's no way in hell i'm handing over my ID to get a free can of snapple with booze in it.
Well that's no different than buying alcohol, the people handing out samples are required to be licensed via smart serve and need to check to make sure you are of age. And all they should be doing is checking birthday.

The majority of them are scumbag exploiters who will use every single human being they can in whatever ways they can get away with. They own a bar to be big-dick over people who can fight back less than most. Even plugs have way more morals than the average bar owner.

Many years ago I stopped going to bars that scanned people's ID.
Sure you can look at it to determine my age, but fuck no you don't get to take a picture of it or enter an image of my ID into some random computer.
Even beyond the bullshit this article is discussing, having pictures of my ID floating around in random places is a massive risk for identity fraud.
7-11 will quite literally scan the barcode on BCID’s / Driver’s licenses, wonder what kind of information they get from it.
Generally exactly the same info that's on the card minus a picture since the pic is to much for the barcode or magstripe.
It's been a while since I've gone to a 7-11, but I don't remember them doing that.

They’ll ID you for simply buying a lighter, as dumb as it sounds, every 7-11 I’ve been to does this.
