US Army attack helicopters crashing at historically high rate amid mechanical issues
The US Army’s Apache helicopters are crashing at a historically high rate amid a widespread problem with the model’s transmission, according to a CNN analysis of military accident data.
The helicopter type has experienced five major crashes since October, and a deadly mishap earlier this month in Texas killed two soldiers, sparked a wildfire and led the Army to temporarily bar Apache pilots from conducting routine training flights. With that crash, fiscal year 2026 is on pace to be the second worst for Apache flight accidents since a new model of the AH-64 was rolled out in 2011.
The Army announced that the pause in training flights, which exempted units deployed to the Middle East, ended Wednesday.

Those helicopters have low testosterone.
Maybe they need gender affirming care?
Nah nah the problem was with the TRANSmission, somehow trans people keep winding up in the military and breaking the helicopters as part of their mission!
Biden's WEAK DEI has allowed too many trans identifying as ATTACK HELICOPTERS to join the Army. /s
and i thought it was just a transphobic joke...
Good
I support this message. Ignore the empty-headed uncritical moralizing from the other comment. These helicopters are weapons of genocide and colonialism, the people flying them understand their function. You shouldn't feel burdened and shunned for writing down what most of us are already feeling, and that feeling is not ultimately in conflict with a universal respect for all life.
This is a horrible take. You really should think better. I get we are all mad at this regime, but damn dude.
I'm mad at people following illegal orders.
We're also mad at the war of aggression we're in and the ones we may soon be in.
They putting cameras all over my city. So I find this to be good news. Fuck these imperial bastards. 40 trillion dollars in debt. Fuck this shit stain of a country and fuck both of these parties. Fuck the cops and fuck your god. Fuck city council & Fuck all the karens too. Ohh fuck your small business if you support flock... I will not be going there. I gave up drinking but not for health. This society is traps inside of traps with mixed messaging. Fuck cars and fuck your moms. Fuck everything. Fuck the USA. Come on bubble create the crash. Come on nukes and blow up their ass. I don't give a fuck anymore. I hate this place with all my being. LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE LAKE OF FIRE Burn baby Buuuuurrrrnnnnn. Fuck Genocidal Joe and the fat ass cheeze burger man.
They must have bought them from the U.S. and, as we all suspected, someone is playing around with the kill switches. /s
Good. Maybe they’ll have to take a break from blowing up schoolgirls and hospitals.
Sure, we'll stop supporting affirmative action and pretend that firing anyone who wasn't us was a good idea. It's not like being a mechanic requires a certain degree of oddball tendencies, and going out of our way to punish oddballs definitely won't come back to bite us.
Sabotage? What's that?
This is what an un-audited military gets you. Auditing the pentagon’s budget is a matter of serious national security. If they don’t submit to one, they are not defending the nation so should be completely defunded.
Yep. It's obvious if you pay attention to real veteran complaints about the va not having enough resources or always denying claims. The money is being funneled to those at the top
The purpose of the MIC is to funnel money to wealthy contractors
MIC stock goes brrrrrrr
This is what happens when they leave the Jesus pin out of helicopter mechanic school
That's what happens when you put some dipshit who thinks militaries should be only "warriors" when all of history tells you successful militaries are logistics engines first and foremost
It's a leadership skill issue.
And worse, when professionalism is replaced with naked sycophancy and corruption.
I wonder how many thousands are gonna get fucked up by being roided up on testosterone supplements they never needed.
I'm picturing the selection process for pilots to be the same as Battlefield games where it's first person to get in the vehicle.
Also, for some reason I assume the Air Force uses the Klingon system for promotions. If you can kill your superior officer, it's perfectly legal. And you get their position. Only the strong survive in the US Air Force.
Did somebody stupid cut servicing checks, along with healthcare, environment and essential checks.
Let's not jump to obvious conclusions when Joe Biden is likely to blame.
I had heard it's us Canadians' fault for not drinking your swill and speaking French.
What are you talking about, this was obviously Clintons fault
It's peanuts! Oh, and talking about peanuts - it's Carter's fault.
I blame Lincoln. Ending slavery put the southern economy in the shitter.
Now look at the gas prices!
Don’t forget removal of oversight of QA, parts custody, etc.
pmcs can only help if you have the logtrain to service and supply it.
I suspect there's large chunks of the military that are pencil whipping the shit outta everything, because they know it's pointless
Once upon a time I would find this sad because USA was an ally defending democracy and freedom, or at least so I thought.
But honestly today, I don't give a shit.
Fuck USA.
They never, ever, defended democracy.
Quite the opposite in fact 🤷
America sided with the defense in both world wars and Korea. For much of the 20th Century America was the good guys who defended democracy in other countries. Then Nixon and neoliberalism turn America into what it is today. But the US was good.
Iran contra scandal anyone? Kidnapping the democratically elected Venezuelan president in 2025 anyone? Illegitimate Iraq war anyone? The list is almost endless
The same fucking familes run things and what is today was a plan from a long time ago. You got gaps son. You got to be some kind of boomer to say some stupid shit like that. Possible a gen X shit eater or a child going through puberty. Not fully developed possibly.
side note... You got anymore of those hard drugs. Whatever you smoking is LOUD. You should share. What you said right there is stupid so I am downvoting the shit out of your stupid ass comment. I can tell you don't read books.
America entered late in both world wars and in both cases only entered to protect US capitalists’ interests. D Day literally only happened because capitalists wanted to occupy Western Europe before the Soviets could liberate everyone.
In Korea, the US worked to prevent the communists from liberating their country from the hyper capitalists who were oppressing their country. Revolutions don’t happen unless things are very bad, and the US stepped in on the side of very bad.
ah yes the great atom bomb defense
So good that, for example, in 1954 Eisenhower's CIA overthrew democratically elected Guatemalan president Jacobo Árbenz.
Let's also not forget the 1953 Iranian coup d'état.
Also Eisenhower's assassination of Patrice Lumumba in the Congo.
It always cracks me up when people quote his warning about the industrial war complex. It's like a guy who just mugged you then warns you afterwards that the alley you walked down is really dangerous...... Thanks I guess?
Wasn’t that speech essentially an expression of regret and admission that he did the wrong thing? That was always the impression I got anyway, and what gives his words even more weight.
Not really, in the same speech he doubled down on the need to rapidly increase the arms industry to combat the Soviets.
You've been fed some horseshit dichotomy of good guy vs bad guy when nothing could be further from the truth. The world doesn't work on such simple terms, and america is responsible for destabilizing much of central and south american democracies under the pretense of defending against communism since the end of WW2. The US was never good.
The book of history never closes no war ever ends. No war but the class war. Reform is a time out so the fascist can regroup and try their tyrannical shit over again. All liberal forms of pascification/reform is meant to get you to let down the gaurd just so they can steam roll your ass later on. There has been no human progress at all and this statement will become real to you once the limp dicked cheese burger king drops a nuke of civilians. Your god means nothing to me. Christains are gross. That is all.
Eh..... Defense doesn't = good guys, especially when considering Korea. The government in South Korea was basically a war crimes machine being driven by an evil dictator.
So long as you ignore the entirety of the southern hemisphere. It's hard to claim they really cared about democracy when they overthrew several democracies in Africa and centra/south america just to install fascist dictators.
So... like the North?
Incomparably worse at the time. The living standard, quality of life, and access to political representation was all much much better in North Korea before the war.
Before and during the war the South Korean government was responsible for the vast majority of all warcrimes. Starting with the Jeju island uprising, where the South killed anywhere from 40-80k of its own citizens after they organized a general strike. It was one of the main events that precipitated the north invading.
Around 2-3 million civilians were killed during the Korean war, over 80% were killed by the South Korean/American government.
You do realize that Native Americans didn’t have the right to vote until the 1970s right? Even in the 20th century America was not a bastion of democracy, and that’s glossing over the Trail of Tears and the whole slavery thing from the previous centuries…
Some people just like eating turds. The america good crowd like eating their turds and they gonna pay for it. for sure
Korean intervention was to overturn democracy. WW2 European intervention was only to prevent USSR full takeover of Germany. Domino theory is not about proving that nazi scarcity oligarchist economics are the best, but to diminish any country that might want to escape nazi colonialism.
What do you mean, "overturn democracy"? South Korea was under authoritarian regime when it was invaded by North Korea + USSR.
South Korean parliamentary elections in 1950 results in 60% of seats for party wanting unification, and 12% for US puppet president's party. President blocked all mandates. Whether North proposals for nationwide elections or unification of parliaments with arrest of Rhee (puppet) were sincere, is deniable. North's attempt to liberate South eventually failed. North/Sung would eventually replace democracy with a Monarchy (Sung's decendants), and questioning his willingness to have taken a pragmatic distribution of power for unification goals is a reasonable western narrative.
South Korea was a military junta at that time. Can you explain how you feel that is defending democracy?
Can you also explain how you feel the world wars were about democracy? Democratic levels on both sides of the wars were roughly even
We straight up installed dictators and over threw democracies all over the world in the fight against communism because they decided to vote in more left leaning politicians.
Here in the grand ole USA we defend concepts even higher than the ideal of democracy first and foremost. Fruit companies. Oil. Shareholder value. HOO-RAH!
I’m very well aware of the failings of the US, but to claim that the US has “never, ever” been on the side of the “good guys” is manifestly false. Specifically: WW2.
You're gonna hate to learn they needed to be paid-off to get into that conflict. "But but but mercenaries for the good guys that time" doesn't hit so hard.
When exactly if I may ask
In them movies.
That’s the American propaganda. It’s so good most people actually believed the USA was a bastion of freedom and democracy. People are finally waking up. Hopefully they won’t just vote blue and pretend like the dems are totally about freedom and democracy.
I just watched a cute little YT video, Satan's Guide to the Bible, that addressed the made up origin story of Israel (among other things) that is openly taught in credible Divinity Schools, that pastors just... ignore when preaching. And I get it, because the mobs would "leave not one alive." But it is very sad how we cling so tightly to our myths without the ability to acknowledge that's all they are, while allowing them to dictate ethos and government.
I'm not sure of any "made up origin of Israel". King David did exist, and the time of most of old testament written.
What happened to Christianity after Rome sacked Jerusalem Church in 70AD was the eventual erasure of Jesus from Christianity. The early 2nd century gnostics argued that exodus 6:3 proved Yahweh was a demon instead of the fatherly figure of El that Jesus was recognizing. The entirety of monotheist Yahweh God stems from a song that King David's musical director made up (psalm 82) where Yahweh kills all the other gods, but no one ever claimed to be a witness to the Astral plane's process of that happening.
When the Gnostics believed in Jesus philophy over warmongering Moses primacy Torah version, that ignores all Jewish prophets condemning the fall of Israelite dominance as God abandoning pieces of shit genocidal evil rulers. Christianity would instead adopt the competing philosophy that every word in bible must be true, culminating in 4th Century roman papacy led by Constantine that declared Jesus and God are equal matter. This formally, forever after, cemented Christianity as being anti-Christ because the Roman empire (now officially Christian) that used the 70AD destruction of Church in the name of Jupiter as the new chosen people, now Christian, shifted to Yahweh viewing the Roman empire as the chosen people. All heretics and non Romans should now be genocided in the name of god, just as Moses said, and the parts of the bible where Israelites were mentioned were transformed them into proto-roman catholics. As late as 16th century, Saint Anne was invented as the Irish-Britany celtic goddess mother of Mary, somehow proto Roman/Catholic. Now you know, Jesus is a quarter-god Quebecois celtic.
There is 0 conclusive contemporaneous historical evidence that King David actually existed.
The Torah itself... was likely written and compiled during roughly 500 BC to 300 BC. David is traditionally supposed to have existed in approximately 1100 BC to 1000 BC. The oldest supposed reference to David is from 925 BC, and this interpretation of a highly damaged relief is contested, theres again 0 contemporaneous evidence, and just a scant bit of contentious/dubiously providenced evidence later than that.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David#Historicity
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davidic_line#Historicity
Given that much of the Torah more or less seems to be a fantastical rewriting of the history of the people exiled from Judea/Canaan/Israel, largely put together when/after they were allowed to return to their homeland by Cyrus, after Persia conquered the Neo Babylonians, so that they could strengthen their group identity with a collective mythic origin...
In all likelihood, if David was real, he would have been more like a chieftain of basically a large village, who was then tall-taled into a much exaggerated ruler of a much exaggerated 'Kingdom', in furtherance of creating that collective unifying myth.
Hopefully I do not need to tell you Moses and Joshua are entirely mythical figures, the Exodus did not actually happen, nor did the Israelite conquest of Canaan.
The reason why God is a jealous God and you shall have no other representations of any other Gods and he smites all other Gods and such is because Yahweh more or less is El + Ba'al, renamed, and amalgamated with the attributes and titles and escapades of other Canaanite deities. The Yahwist cult was an offshoot of the general Canaanite religion, that started roughly somewhere bewteen the 13th and 9th centuries BC, that decided their amalgamation God was superior to the original pantheon.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahwism
The tale of the conquest of Canaan by Joshua is basically a dramatized allegory of the Yahwists gaining traction and popularity in Judah/Israel.
After that group returned from Babylon to their original homeland, influenced by the two-god paradigm of Zoroastrianism... their original homeland was at that time populated by people whom some of which were Yahwists, but many of whom more or less still held to the polytheist version of Canaanite religion.
I appreciate that Torah was written during 2nd temple. But the relatively recent 1st temple history and prophets cursing their kings, and declaring God himself will destroy the temple, and contradicting Moses law, seems to chronicle a fall that seems too intricate. But, there is archeological evidence that Jerusalem and Judah (David and Solomon) (surround it) had small 10000 population. That Israel was a more powerful friendly kingdom to the north, and Judahan history got rewritten after Syrians invaded and displaced Israel's citizens to Judah. Very hard to judge if its too crazy, when religion continuously proves very crazy.
The more likely history of Judah is that the Philistines forced Egypt to reduce its empire, and Saul, just before David, consolidated the few poor tribes of Judah in defense to Philistines, with David paying tribute to Philistines to survive. Yahweh war god's chosen people never fought or vanquished anyone anywhere near Judah/Israel. It is also Israel side that laid claim to a Moses heritage instead of the Judah/David side. It would all get merged later after Israel was invaded.
All the myths are mixed and recycled from Sumer, to Egypt, to Canaan, India, China, Persia, etc, and were never meant to be taken at face value is the point. But you'd have to delve deep into Kabbalah, ancient Sumerian, Egyptian, Sufism, Tantra, Babylonian Talmudic, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, Gnostic mysticism to get scratch the surface. I've been looking into it for decades, especially the last three or four years, because I had time and regular internet. Especially look to understand PaRDeS, the multi-layered garden, from which we get the word, "Paradise," and multiple other esoteric myths, like the 72 names, Abra Melin, the Ethiopian Bible, etc etc etc. It's quite enthralling, and while I don't take my faith literally, anymore, I do take it more seriously. "Milk and meat," and "When I was a child, I thought, reasoned, understood as a child, when I became a woman, I put away childish things." It's entirely worth the time and effort, should you decide to embark on the journey. Peace/Salaam/Shalom, either way.
I think I broadly agree with all of this.
Well, 'Syrians' is a somewhat problematic term, but basically yes.
Ah thats an interesting further uh, wrinkle in the story, I'd guess you could say.
Plausible, certainly, I think.
But yes it gets... very complicated, very fast, the more detail one tries to cover, but again, broadly that all seems plausible to likely, to me.
Sorry didn't mean to be purely critiqueing, I thought you had a pretty good take on all the... gnostic complexities running parellel to developments in Judaism itself, post 2nd temple destruction and such.
I just had to quibble with a flat out assertion of David as historical, hahaha, maybe I was too zealous =P

A bigger problem with the Abraham myth is the close lineage to Noah/Shem. The only geological possibility of a massive flood story is instead of 40 days/nights or rain, was a 100 year flood of Persian Gulf Oasis (likely site of Atlantis) in 6100bc as a result of ice age melting. That's 4000 years prior to Abraham's dating.
It’s possible you two are talking about different things. There’s Israel [the place on Earth] and then there’s Israel [the recently created country/colony].
Zionism exists based on Moses inventing a demon that mandates genocide and destruction of enemy idols for Moses's chosen followers that eventually leads to Israel domination by King David. Selectively using that section of Old Testament, while ignoring all of the latter Jewish prophets, fully included in Old Testament, that claimed God had abandoned them as chosen people due to the evil of their kings. Christianity used to claim it was the chosen people including Americans through Manifest destiny. It's a good scam to get fanatics into your army/injustice squads.
Satan's origins come from 2nd temple jews, who incidentally could build 2nd temple because Iran liberated them from Babylonians. Before I get to that...
The first temple period lasted 500 years after King David, where Jewish prophets, like Jesus, are woke anti-poverty activists that keep shouting their kings suck more and more, ending in Jerimiah declaring God will destroy this temple because Jews are no longer the Chosen people. After in exile, "God no longer favours kings", and "God is in your heart" similar though less eloquent to "Do onto others as you wish done onto you".
The second temple changes Jews to monotheist pure, and angels serving the demon Yahweh are invented to replace the Pantheon he supposedly overthrew. There are 2 origins of Satan. Baal (The Greeks called him the same as Zeus) was worshiped by Philistines as Baal-Zebul. The storm god jews and other tribes prayed to if they wanted crops to grow, instead of King's private messages on who to murder and steal from. Kings David and Solomon both names sons after Baal. Jews demonized rivals to Yahweh, and by the time of Jesus, Beelzebub was interchangeable with Satan, with Jesus quoted as using the term interchangeably. The 2nd origin is Lucifer. This is pure Roman fuckery in latin mistranslation of the hebrew word for venus/morning star, in yet another song, this time mocking Babylonian King who conquered Israelites for thinking he is the "falling star of venus" instead of the real "sun" god. The fallen angel myth comes from absolute stupidity.
Both origins of Satan are complete BS, and so source has linguistic issues preventing me from bothering to view it. It is also disconnected with the selective parts of the bible that support Zionism, and the state of Israel that was created by that movement.
There's Palestine.
But to be fair, that is pretty much the only unambiguous example that comes to mind.
It is a totally ambiguous example. The US under Truman partnered with the Vatican to save almost 10k Nazis from trial and spread them all over the US sphere of influence with protection, money, jobs, property, etc. and then it immediately took over imperial Japan's holding of Korea, established a fascist military dictatorship, and killed a million civilians in the North. Around the same time it protected the KMT in the province of Taiwan during the White Terror wherein the KMT established a fascist government that killed tens of thousands of civilians for political control.
It's completely ambiguous whether or not the US was fighting for freedom or liberty.
I'm afraid npt even that was the case
Genuinely the recent sci-fi trope where the current wave of human civilisation simply sputters to a halt because all the technology is too complicated and unrepairable with built-in obsolescence and all operational knowledge tied up within itself
I've yet to see an example movie of such a trope. Believable though.
Wall-E, Idiocracy, Ergo Proxy (anime), Fallout, Mad Max, pretty much every dystopian future movie. Common trope in zombie films and shows as well.
Trigun (anime).
There are some extra steps there but yes lol.
You could also do Kenshi (video game) as well, haha!
waterworld
Engineers are woke. We DOGEd em all because we care about your freedom
Behold: The commoditized military!
Military as a Service.
Mercenaries offered by private companies have been a thing in Murica for ages
Yeah. They're called cops now. :)
I was thinking of blackwater or whatever being deployed instead of government-paid mercenaries (i.e. soldiers).
Boeings doing what Boeings always do, nothing different about the Boeing.
A lot of comments on here didn't read the article and/or simply don't know how aviation or military aviation works.
Some blaming the current administration even though the article notes a slightly higher accident rate in 2024. The current model Helicopter was fielded in 2011, and the article doesn't mention when the transmission issues began.
This could be a maintenance problem, a Boeing problem. Is Boeing or an army subcontractor rebuilding the transmissions?
I just did inspections on some gearboxes because the incorrect self-locking nuts were used. I've seen a series of accidents caused by o-rings made out of spec internal to hydraulic servos. I remember NASA killing a crew due to o-ring issues. I remember a few decades ago Airbus had a series of helicopter accidents where the main rotors detached due to a gear in the main transmissions being hardened incorrectly. Before all that De Haviland Comets were coming apart in air due to metal fatigue.
We should be concerned with the reaction to and correction of the issues. The Army has grounded training flights, which they should. Not long ago the V-22 fleet was grounded for like a year while clutch failures were investigated.
Just because YOU'VE only just heard of an issue doesn't mean it hasn't been a long standing issue nor that it's the fault of whoever is in charge right now. We need more information before we start finger pointing.
Though Boeing has been on a downhill trend since the McDonald Douglas takeover.
I don’t care about pointing blame, I’m just celebrating the disruption to US imperialism.
The reason the Taliban didn't bother trying to use US helicopters and other advanced equipment left in Afghanistan, was that the required maintenance wasn't just expensive, it required a robust supply infrastructure.
The entire US military has massive supply issues, and the idiots running it will keep destroying very expensive equipment and risking the lives of service members because they're not acknowledging the supply issues.
No one wants to put ten toes down and say "that can't fly".
Because all the high up officers who won't just tell trump what he wants, resigned to protect their pensions.
They're all cowards and this is on their hands as much as the yes men who stayed in.
I think Americans are starting to realize Trump see us as entirely disposable.
Everyone has already realised that long time ago, except for the usual third of the population. And they aren't realising shit.
It's not that, it's the same shit as what happened to the Soviet military.
It's nothing but grifters and yes men, so "on paper" doesn't match reality.
Like inventory sheet says 100 helicopters that have been getting a million dollars of maintenance a month. But in reality you got 50 "good enough" and 50 that literally can't fly. You can't admit that, so the 50 do double duty flights, still not getting maintenance even tho the government is paying for all 100 to be serviced.
The "good enoughs" could be brought up to working order, but instead the problem is hid, and they crash totalling them out and people die. Everytime it happens, it increases the odds of happening again.
This isn't just something that can be fixed on day 1. It's a rot deep inside the military because everyone not doing it at a high level resigned.
Now we got to push everyone still in out, and replace them.
That takes decades at this level, because new officers need to raise their the ranks, and good people won't join till the image recovers.
Whether it's for better or worse we'll have to wait and see, but the days of global American military precense won't be back for 20 years at least.
Skynet possibility aside, it seems impossible to regain dominance. When the Pentagon cannot make a good argument for rebuilding GCC bases, because of their obvious Iran capability to destroy them again a week later, they are further effectively admitting that the budget requests needed to overcome that incapacity can no longer be passed by congress.
This is a bigger, though newer, problem with F35. Lockheed clampdown on providing manuals to US army, and all service done through them, makes it an extremely expensive program. Low flight readiness ratio reflects the requirement to canibalize parts from some planes for the ones that fly. For decades, US weapons programs have been an oligarchy enrichment program to spend as much as possible, independent of security/capability enhancement.
Hopefully they'll never return
Oh...
No...
I am SOOOOOO concerned...
Anyway....
Let me guess, AI decided to extend certain maintenance schedules and the wrenches who know better were ordered to go along with it.
Behold the new fundamentally flawed apache attack helicopter, hundreds of millions spent to replace the old fundamentally flawed apache attack helicopter. Boeing too busy counting their money to notice.
You don't like the Apache MAX?
Saved you a click: Five "notable" crashes
As far as I can tell, the official data combines multiple categories of incident into the total - the "Class A flight mishap" is what we think of as a crash (helicopter fall down, go boom), and the unreported rest are everything from "Huey Louie landed too rough for nosegear-kun >_< " to "engine fell out and they plummeted, but lived". It's not a great article, but it looks like they're doing the best they can with the data they have.
Ok, so what does this look like in terms of the risk to an actual individual pilot? For example, at that crash rate, what's the probability of an Apache pilot being involved in a crash over the course of their career?
I can't answer that, I'm sorry. We would have to know the number of apache pilots, their average service length and at least their average flight times (and more accurately, the experience rates at which accidents are likely to occur) to get even a ballpark figure - this info is reported sometimes, but I don't know of a place where that data is readily publicly available.
^(edit:^ ^typo,^ ^clarity)^
There is something special je ne sais quoi about the Apache helicopter.

More like kakastocracy, amirite?
No
They were making a joke about the Spanish word for “shit”: caca.
So much winning.

Seems to be a batch of bad transmissions.
So hard to care.
Hell yeah.
"crashing" yeah....

hope it’s not mechanical issues but instead actual attack.
I bet they're hiding losses to the enemy as malfunctions
