I also find it irritating that we talk about political actors as if they are compelled, and not as if every damn thing they do is a cruel and selfish choice made by people who shouldn't have never fucking been there in the first place
It's a timing thing too. If the US congress flips in November, Ukraine is likely to get more support and less interference from the US. Also by which time all the gas shortages Ukraine has been causing will be getting deadly serious. Putin knows the only way he retires is in a box, so he's very likely to do something stupid out of desperation.
