How do you deal with hyperfixations taking over your life?

How do you deal with hyperfixations taking over your life?

Sometimes I'm afraid of doing new things because I can become so obsessed, I abandon necessary jobs and routines for like 2 weeks and then I need to build momentum back, it pisses me off a lot

It's honestly a challenge for me. I've also tried the extreme route of avoiding new things, but life becomes incredibly dull and an intense mental restlessness takes over... It then becomes hard to really get into anything and mutes the joy I feel across the board. I now welcome new fixations but do my best to keep my wallet uninvolved for as long as possible (super hard 😅). If I try too hard to curve the time and energy investment I put into something new, it ultimately disconnects me from the joy I feel exploring it at all. I've learned to accept that there will be many things that I'll love for a moment and eventually lose interest in. It doesn't always feel great 🥲; I'll make connections with people and enjoy my time with them surrounding a certain interest, but I'll become emotionally disconnected after the fixation ends. I try to set the expectation for people early on that I'll most likely just be a visitor in their lives.

As far as fitting fixations into my routine- I almost always have a list of tasks/goals I want to complete for a day. Once my tasks are done, I'll allow my brain to enjoy itself over whatever it wants. I think having organization methods helps. I use Obsidian to organize so many of my thoughts, interests, errands, lists, etc. I use a daily note to keep me on track; Once all my items are checked off, or at least slotted into a time, I don't have to worry about how much time I allow for an interest.

Since when I was a kid and poor and had a random interest in topic X and asked my mom to go and spend some money to invest into that X only for me to be forever regretful and feel bad to see it all rot away sitting quiet in a corner whithout me touching it ever again... I just learned to never pick anything up in the real world and just sit looking at tv waiting for said will to dissapear. Simple.

Another way is to over focus on everything tech related that is contained to the internet or specific things that can provide endless hours and days of random deep diving on all kinds of weird things... For free, without ever having to spend a dimme.

On the job I try to sell myself into doing things that I can focus for a few days to learn about some random thing. But then when it's over it's freaking hard to start anything else for almost 2 days.

That definitely makes it tougher. Forming new and better habits wasn’t something I was able to do until I got Adderall. And at first I still went down rabbit holes, but I was finally able to focus on other stuff, like work. After a couple of years on the meds, managing the stuff you are talking about has gotten easier. Microdosing ketamine was also very helpful for me. It allowed me to stop getting worked up about things not being done correctly, but that’s probably also not available where you are.

I love it, it's the only time I get dopamine. It helps that I'm a house wife though.

I have turned multiple hyperfixations into useful things and even jobs.

For me it is about guiding it to a positive direction but also accepting that sometimes I will go down a rabbit hole that will cost me, and that's okay. Kind of like going out for junk food, don't make it a habit, but don't feel bad for indulging sometimes.

Currently im very into learning about the things i have been using everyday... Started with ssh, im currently on IPv4 and TCP specs to implement them.

Currently very fascinated that IPv4 has optional flags for security classification, like you can mark a packet as top secret. Part of me wants to request a webpage with them set and see if anything cares... based on what i have read i don't expect anything to care since the additional header fields are protocol specific.

I get fixated with disabling IPv4 altogether because it's old garbage.
