See, instead of using the eraser tool, I just ctrl-click the background (which was grey) to select its color and draw over the lines, and then again ctrl-click the linework, usually black, to get the color i'm drawing with. When I'm done I 'select all pixels of the color of the linework' and cut and paste it to a new layer. then I remove the layer with whatever was left. I forgot to do that step here.
