Do they really want to fuck around with Japan again? Because that went really well the last time.
Fun fact: the Japanese constitution forbids use of the military outside of self-defence. As Japanese law still considers these islands Japanese territory, this is a conflict Japan could, conceivably, actually go to war over. I'm not saying they will; only that this is a rare case where their constitution would allow it.
What's weird is that Japan actually relinquished claims on those islands except specifically to the USSR at the time.
