Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, around 29,000 Ukrainian soldiers have undergone training in Germany, according to the Bundeswehr.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the interior ministry is aware of around 80 cases and across Germany, there are said to be hundreds of such incidents of Ukrainian troops deserting after completing their military training.

80 out of 29000 sounds like low numbers for a country being invaded and defending along multiple fronts. Good on Ukrainians for returning home to defend.

The federal government has not yet published any official nationwide statistics. Nor are any publicly confirmed figures currently available from other states.

Many of them didn't volunteer, they were conscripted and were probably waiting for a chance to escape.

My dad was in the military and he said to me years later that when he was in training that it was physical and psychological torture and when he was finished that he wanted nothing to do with the military but war broke out and he went back because of me and my mom, he never said he regretted it but he was wounded and almost died and i sometimes wondered if all of his drunken escapades were a way to cope with everything he endured, he now spends his days biking across the country, sometimes hundreds of kilometres.
