'A floating prison' - sailors describe life on warships like USS Abraham Lincoln

Burnell told the BBC he's been watching on the brink of tears as concern mounts about conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln - which has been deployed as part of the US-Iran war since 11 December, more than double his deployment aboard the Vinson.

Military on the Lincoln are reportedly contending with food shortages, broken plumbing and exhaustion, according to two US publications that cover the military - the Military Times and Stars & Stripes.

Family members of sailors onboard have expressed concern about their mental health deteriorating due to the conditions, with some sailors having reportedly attempted to jump overboard.

Years of research by the VA has determined troops and veterans are at a 50% higher risk of suicide compared to the general American population.

Is that normal?

Troops can be bored or anxious, but the ships they are on have chaplains and mental health counsellors, he says, and the troops are well-equipped to deal with the stress.

I don't think so

Bombing the shit out of a land that was minding their own business make white people sad. More news at 9, when we'll show how to make water wet.

Seriously, first, get the fuck out of there and go harass your own civil population.

Second, how hard is it to get a ship to bring 10 pallets of food, water and a couple engineers to fix the plumbing and whatever is broken? Duh it's a war zone then get a freaking war logistics ship. You must have at least one right?

Third, stop acting like world police and go police yourself. Or no one, if that was even possible.

I don't know why they see the veterans so well seen when they went to wars for the rich and not to actually protect anyone outside of the billionaires interests.

Nothing screams freedom as much as killing some civilians, kids and innocents 10k km away from home. Torture for you and enhanced interrogation techniques for us.

American propaganda is wild. It's so effective, people don't even realize it exists, they just call it "news" or "movies" or whatever, and it moulds their minds into good little servants of the ruling class, and they still think their opinions are their own.

Clearly America is the most advanced nation in the World - their terrorists already start in prison!

Or they genuinely have few options that afford them healthcare, college, and a retirement. There's a reason poor kids end up joining the military.

They have shit for options other than crime and poverty wages outside of the military. Sure many members join because they're violent bastards, but tons of them join because the capitalist system offers them no other obvious future.

More like they want what every other Western nation has: free healthcare, living wages, free education, etc. Only way to consistently get it is to sign up for the military.

So what they really want is to live in another country? But they can’t so they’re willing to kill to have more than the average American.

Screw them all

Not sure how you got that out of what I said. What they want (and what they're promised) is material wellbeing. Few people in the military directly kill anyone. As far as indirect killings go, the private sector isn't much better.

1

Not concerned with whataboutism.

Indirectly killing is still killing. Mopping the floor of a ship that launches missiles makes you a killer too.

You and I don’t have to agree, but please know my opinion is firm on this.

Isn't it defensible when trying to protect your home from invaders, like Ukrainian volunteers fighting against Russia, or Vietnamese volunteers fighting against the USA? Tho I think the majorities in both those cases (on both sides) may have been forcibly drafted.

A lot of them chose to sign up with the US military industrial complex, so they get what they deserve.

Sure, it is a volunteer army, but it is also a path out of poverty, and a path to citizenship. As such, I disagree with the premise that they "deserve it." Stop punching down.

You reached the end
