I use Media Player Classic too - been using it since about Win7 when MS started bloating the native player.
But then I don't really watch stuff on my PC, so it's just for quick things.
Since both VLC and MPHC start fast and just work, that's all I need.
I use this too and probably for the same time and reasons as you. It's light weight and can open as many players as needed.
and if you have a 1080p or less screen, you can get a Windows Media Player skin for VLC

Can't fork closed source. But it's trying to reimplement it and have the same feel.
technically yeah it seems like they're reimplementing the whole thing step by step
I still use WinAmp, altho for the same sorts of things I was doing ages ago. It still hits the Shoutcast network (sorta), still has the gorgeous Milkdrop built-in, still handles music perfectly well and can fill-in missing song info from online sources IIRC.
What would you say about it now is "quite shit?"

their official build is a barely updated beta version, the company behind it has done some sketchy stuff lately (NFT..)
there's just no reason to use it over WACUP since its based on 5.666 and compatible with all the old plugins
Hmm, okay. Hadn't heard of that one, thanks. Last upgrade of sorts I remember trying was FUBAR, or something like that.
Looks like WACUP can do audio normalization or "ReplayGain," so that's a big plus. I'll add it to my install list, and thanks again.
foobar2000 probably, it's also another good audio player but it doesn't really feel like winamp
this WACUP is literally based on winamp, and there's also stuff like audacious that kinda looks like winamp but not based off it and works on Linux/Mac
Oh flog me, it's embarrassing for me still to be using Windows at this point. Really need to decide upon one of the millions of flavors of Linux to at least create a dual-boot system. 😑
So, circling back to the https://getwacup.com/ page, do you know what's meant by the "public WACUP preview" download? Is it just a demo or something with limited options, do you know?

they seem to have a non-public development build for some reason
there's no limitations in features or anything
