Memorialising ‘Comfort Women’ in Berlin

During the Asia-Pacific War, the Imperial Japanese military systematically abducted and raped women and underage girls from Japanese colonies and occupied territories. It is estimated around 200,000 people were forced into the ‘comfort women’ system. To date, the Japanese government has neglected to acknowledge its responsibility for the war crime or to offer official apologies and victim-centred reparation plans.

Immediately after the installation of Ari, the Japanese government made complaints to the German Foreign Office, the Berlin Senate, and the Mitte District Office.

In May 2024, just after his official visit to Tokyo, Wegner published a press release announcing his intention to remove Ari, describing her as a “one-sided representation.” A few days later, the media reported on a financial corporation agreement signed between Berlin City and a Japanese corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.

Yeap, modern Japan was basically built and run by the fascist criminals that committed countless war crimes against their neighbors.

Nobusuke Kishi was in charge of organizing and utilizing the coerced foreign "labour" during WW2. He was held as a class A war criminal for several years but was conveniently let go without ever being prosecuted.

He would go on to be the prime minister during the most important reconstruction period after the war. His grandson and longest serving prime minister in Japanese history would go on to vehemently deny the existence of systemic abuse of comfort women. A wartime "resource" that his grandfather would have been responsible for organizing.

The vast majority of leaders in Japan since ww2 have been war criminals, the children of war criminals, or the grandchildren of war criminals. So it's not hard to understand why their crimes against women and humanity in general have been met with denials.
