We just got our very first look at Project Rustbound, the successor to the cancelled BIONICLE: Masks of Power, with a cinematic trailer being premiered during the 810NICLE Direct as part of this year’s #810NICLEDay celebrations.

The teaser begins by showing a distant, rocky landscape as a clump of glowing blue crystals is taken over by a strange black substance before breaking into pieces. We then find ourselves in a cave where multiple symbols light up, each representing an element interacting with the environment:

fire burning trees, earth forming green crystals, water washing up on basalt shores and air kicking up a storm in an arid biome. A final one is then shown, but this one doesn’t light up. Instead, a bladed weapon and eyes appear in front of it before we lift up to reveal a bigger symbol, this time shining a light directly into the camera.

We then get sent to a beach where we can see a celestial body in the sky, likely indicating that this game takes place on a moon orbiting a planet, as well as some stairs, showing that this area is inhabited. It’s here that we also find a fallen robot that regains consciousness and gets up to see a distant structure, which looks a lot like some kind of engine. Finally, we get the logo reveal: Rustbound, in active development.

Now, as mentioned in my previous coverage of BIONICLE: Masks of Power’s cancellation, Rustbound is not based off of any existing BIONICLE lore. Instead, this is an action RPG taking place in an entirely new world, and this trailer serves as a milestone for Unmasked Games moving from the pre-production stage to full-on production, with work on the art and level design now commencing.

Though this remains a project made by a small team and, as such, updates may be scarce, but I’ll try to notify you of any future developments when they happen. In the meantime, I would highly recommend joining the game’s official Discord server and following all of its socials if you’d like to know about any news as soon as possible.
