this was me buying $100 yoyos... then I got an associates in applied mathematics and I now can't stop talking about it.

That's what I came here to say. Find a math/ science adjacent hobby (note: hobby must be expensive) to devote a disgusting amount of time researching, then use some of those skills to find a job. I like computers, 3d printers, and cars; I got a job servicing and installing industrial equipment.

Sometimes you don't even have to partake in the expensive hobby. Just spend weeks reading about it on Wikipedia and forums and watch a few dozen hours of YouTube videos on it and you're bound to get enough side knowledge to be useful in some field.
