People Recommend Lower Pay for Women-Dominated Jobs, Study Finds

Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara, found that people recommended lower salaries for the exact same occupation when it was presented as being made up of mostly women rather than mostly men.

"Women still earn 85 cents for every dollar men earn," said Catherine Taylor, an associate professor of sociology at UC Santa Barbara and lead author of the study. While some of that gap is linked to women working in lower-paying occupations, Taylor said her team's research asked a different question: Are some occupations paid less because women are in them?

Taylor said the findings challenge the idea that wage differences are driven by women simply choosing lower-paying careers.

"The pay gap is not about some inherent preference in women for jobs that offer lower wages," she said. "Rather, it is that we actually do pay women's occupations less because we devalue women."

I can't number the arguments I've been in IRL where people say the pay gap isn't a thing anymore.

Always talk about wages with your coworkers (if theyre consenting). You should absolutely know how much the men around you are making.

Equal pay should be a federal law and an International human right.

We saw this in action when programming shifted from employing mostly women to mostly men.
