Unchecked corruption and endless media propaganda leading to runaway regulatory capture resulting in an untenable concentration of wealth and power into far too few individuals and organizations.

Edit: also, donkey brains 🫏 🧠

I'm sorry we share this terrible affliction. That being said, your comment reads more of a blaming thing and I'm looking for excuses. Do you have any excuses?

Doing the right thing is perfectly easy and perfectly possible until there's a financial incentive for it to not be easy or possible.

It was an issue with older ballot styles. In Florida, during the 2000 election, they were using ballots where you would use a hole punch to choose who you voted for. Sometimes, the hole punch did not fully cut the paper and the little bit (the chad) would still be attached. It could then cover up the hole, or cover a different one, so when the machine would read it, it could register as a different vote.

It was how Bush stole the 2000 elections from Al Gore and set the stage for the fascist takeover of the US, backed by the Supreme Court.

It’s been series of cascading failures since then. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_v._Gore

Our society and the environment have been held hostage ever since.

Deity belief doesn’t really come into this. I presume since you’re atheist, you’re existentialist, but at that point you still have to define what you’re responsible for and why. How much do you want to survive in this universe and for how long? What do you want to get out of it and how much? What do you consider to be the border of “you” and “not you”?

2
lemmy.ca

Where do you define the boundary of “I” though? Your brain? Your body? The stuff you say is yours? Your microbiome? Your thoughts? Your actions?

2

Why? I’m asking you who “you” are. Sounds like you may not know, which may cause difficulties.

That was probably true back in olden times when Buddha was writing his college thesis on that, but there's at least like 30 different people today and I'm not one of them.

2

There are some people in there that actually aren't that different. Shawn vs Sean sort of thing. Probably closer to 20 people in 2014, crypto/AI/politics really gummed things up.

2
sopuli.xyz

I wouldn't either but I think it just happens sometimes. If you are me and nobody has told you yet, good going for not getting anyone preggers. This all could have been worse

The answer as always is capitalism. Literally every terrible thing happening can be linked back to the desire for profit.

Why would I need excuses? I've been trying to stop this for 20 years. Political movements, organizing, writing and sharing useful information. I don't need excuses. If you want an explanation, I can give you my perspective, but I don't regret not doing more. I did as much as I could and paid dearly for it.

No, I've been "Green Beard" since 2005, but I heard it was a great game.

I'm preoccupied with my health and I don't feel like I have a lot of agency to accomplish much. That's slowly changing, maybe.

Every time someone catches covid they lose 1 IQ point on average. Since (unless you're vaccinated) you don't really become immune anymore, you're likely to lose several IQ points a year. QED.

(That said, things were already going downhill before The Great Lurgy).

my life is great.

not responsible for anyone else's choices. and sick of weirdos who try to tell me i am, i notice such folks tend to be very unhappy with their own life choices and tend to blame other folks for them rather than take make better choices for themselves.
