It gets worse. The FDA identified where the cyclospora was coming from, then said "actually never mind, they're perfect" after realizing the company had donated $3mil to conservatives

For [Monroe County [Michigan] resident Brian] Clare, a grain and beef farmer, coping with the illness has required bringing rolls of toilet paper with him atop his tractor. And if the moment calls, "pop a squat in the middle of the field".

So he's just admitted that he's furthering the spread of this disease? Can anyone sanction this fucking idiot?

"I've not got time to go to no freaking doctor," he said. "Most farmers try to self-medicate anyway. We don't have the best insurance in the world."

Why is no one mentioning that cyclospora has no vector, it's human fecal oral. So who is shitting on the lettuce?

It's a wee bit complicated:

The pathogen is persistent. The oocyst (transmission form) can survive in soil for a very long time (months or even years).

It's also very small and can be carried by wind or water etc.

Standard washing and disinfecting of food has no effect on the oocyst. The the oocyst are strongly protected and remain dormant until inside a host.

The host range for the pathogen is unknown. It is found very rarely in animals so adequate screening is very difficult.

Genetically it undergoes sexual reproduction. This means that the population is naturally heterozygous and constantly changing. Unlike bacterial or viral infections you can not isolate a strain and link infections. This makes determining a source extremely complicated.

Most cases of infection are theorized to be mild.

Apparently the guy harvesting them while having screaming diarrhea

Pickers shitting in field or not washing hands after portapotty, or maybe the human manure they started using in places is not properly treated
