Shadowbanning a sizeable chunk of lemmy users and instances, via a poor attempt at a stealth blocklist in your frontend app is uh, not cool.

Sadly, Tesseract users won't be able to see this post for some reason.

Anyway, I've heard this is apparently an unpopular opinion.

Thoughts?

I have not seen a single comment or post that this would be unpopular take at all on this mess. Every place I look is people judging this, sharing the lists or making memes on whether they have been banned or not. Where are the users who agree with the hideyhole-shadowbanning? I'd like to see what their arguments are.

// I went looking and found a few comments, but all of those were downvoted into oblivion and/or misunderstood/oversimplified the situation. So I think OP is in the popular side with their opinion.

This was done by the same people who previously used a trigger-happy+non-transparent script to ban users who downvoted? I'm shocked, SHOCKED! (well, not that shocked)

I have seen some mention that they did mass bans for users who never interacted with their instance, so it seems like something that might have shifted to after they shut their instance off. The list could've been automated, too.

Also, now I know they'll be censoring me.

I am talking about the (now defunct) Dubvee instance, a single downvote could result in a ban. Either because there was no threshold on a script, or because a mod/admin directly took issue with your values/disagreement.

And some things I found via search:

1 year ago:

It’s like they have a whole system for synchronizing instance wide bans from comments made in other communities on other instances in the fediverse.

2 years ago:

I would, but I’m instance banned from dubvee for being a Luigi supporter

Which lines up with the new info coming out mentioned by the other user.
